A special event as part of JUG Italia’s “Extension Demos: In Touch With Developers” series: this time, the spotlight will be on Gianluca Gabella, who will present his open-source project for a Joomla 5+ template built on Bootstrap Italia and designed to comply with WCAG guidelines and accessibility regulations for the Italian public administration.

A project still in beta, but with enormous potential for the Joomla community and the world of digital Public Administration.

Join us for a special event as part of the ‘Extension Demos: In Touch With Developers’ series, organised by JUG Italia. This time, the star of the evening will be Gianluca Gabella, a Joomla developer and consultant, who will be demonstrating a project particularly close to his heart: a fully accessible template for Joomla 5+, built on Bootstrap Italia and aligned with the Italian Public Administration’s design system guidelines.

What is Bootstrap Italia and why does it matter for the Public Administration

Bootstrap Italia is a Bootstrap 5 theme designed for creating web applications in full compliance with the design guidelines for the Public Administration’s websites and digital services. It is built on the foundations of Bootstrap 5, from which it inherits components, grids and utility classes, customising them to implement solutions in accordance with current regulations on design and accessibility.

Designers Italia is the benchmark for the design of the Public Administration’s digital services, and it is precisely from the Designers Italia ecosystem that Bootstrap Italia was born and is maintained, in collaboration between the Department for Digital Transformation and AgID.

A Joomla template for the Public Administration: Gianluca Gabella’s project

The project presented by Gianluca is a fully open-source and free template for Joomla 5+, available on GitHub, which integrates Bootstrap Italia as its basis for style and structure. The aim is to provide public bodies, developers and communities with a solid starting point for creating Joomla sites that comply with accessibility regulations, without having to reinvent the wheel every time.

The template is designed to comply with:

• The WCAG 2.2 guidelines (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines)
• The WAI-ARIA 1.2 specifications for accessibility patterns in interactive components
• The European standard EN 301 549, transposed into Italian legislation
• The operational guidelines of AgID and the national design system

Still in beta: community input is essential

The project is currently in active development and has been released as a beta version. It is therefore not yet ready for production on institutional websites, but it can already be installed and tested directly from GitHub. This is precisely why the Italian Joomla community plays a crucial role: reporting issues, suggesting improvements, contributing code or simply raising awareness of the topic are all valuable forms of participation.

Joomla is used by hundreds of public bodies in Italy, but accessibility in open-source CMSs is still an issue that is often overlooked. Bringing Bootstrap Italia into the Joomla ecosystem means bridging a real gap and opening up a new path for those who need to build compliant public administration websites without sacrificing Joomla’s flexibility.

Cos'è Bootstrap Italia e perché conta per la PA

Bootstrap Italia è un tema Bootstrap 5 pensato per la creazione di applicazioni web nel pieno rispetto delle linee guida di design per i siti internet e i servizi digitali della PA. È costruito sulle fondamenta di Bootstrap 5, di cui eredita componenti, griglie e classi di utilità, personalizzandole per implementare soluzioni secondo le normative vigenti in materia di design e accessibilità.

Designers Italia è il punto di riferimento per la progettazione dei servizi digitali della Pubblica Amministrazione, ed è proprio dall'ecosistema Designers Italia che Bootstrap Italia nasce e viene mantenuto, in collaborazione tra il Dipartimento per la Trasformazione Digitale e AgID.

Un template Joomla per la PA: il progetto di Gianluca Gabella

Il progetto presentato da Gianluca è un template per Joomla 5+ completamente open source e gratuito, disponibile su GitHub, che integra Bootstrap Italia come base di stile e struttura. L'obiettivo è fornire a enti pubblici, sviluppatori e community un punto di partenza solido per realizzare siti Joomla conformi alle normative di accessibilità, senza dover reinventare la ruota ogni volta.

Il template è progettato per rispettare:

Proprio per questo la community Joomla italiana ha un ruolo cruciale: segnalare problemi, proporre miglioramenti, contribuire con codice o semplicemente portare attenzione al tema sono tutte forme di partecipazione preziose.

Joomla è utilizzato da centinaia di enti pubblici in Italia, ma l'accessibilità nei CMS open source è ancora un tema spesso trascurato. Portare Bootstrap Italia nell'ecosistema Joomla significa colmare un gap reale e aprire una strada nuova per chi deve realizzare siti PA conformi senza rinunciare alla flessibilità di Joomla.
