I would like to take this time to let the community know what exactly is happening with their JRD listing. Why it hasn’t been posted yet, the future of the JRD approval process, and how the JRD team is going to try to speed up

Why is approval taking so long?

There are a number of issues related to why listings are taking so long to approve. Let me explain the problem: People aren’t reading, understanding, or paying attention to the Terms of Service agreement that they are agreeing to when they submit. This was a problem that I addressed in my 4 Tips For Speedy JRD Approval.

What about the people who are? Why aren’t they getting approved? Here’s why:

At the JRD we’ve been trying to follow a first come first serve basis. We believed this was fair and appropriate. However with this system, a few problems arise. We have a ratio of about 1 to 10. This means for every 10 listings, 1 of them are suitable for immediate approval. The other 9 are not.

So how does this clog the system? Well I’m sure you can imagine the problem. Prior to the JRD checklist (which I’ll talk about later), we were sending an email to each and every inadmissible listing owner to notify him or her that his or her listing had a problem. We went so far as to detail the problem and offer solutions. As I’m sure you can imagine this takes a great deal of time. Especially for volunteers such as ourselves on the JRD team who all work full time jobs, have families and other interests, this grueling and time consuming process severely clogged up the pipes.

How are we fixing it?

Internal Discussions between JRD team members have brought about a solution – that is, the JRD Checklist.

The checklist is a way for us to check a few things out on your listing, to help you get your listing approved faster, and to make our jobs as JRD editors easier. This is accomplished by asking some key questions. By asking these questions we throw off people who are just looking for more PR links to their site (which we are not approving, so don’t even try), and get other people who have real problems with their site or listing content to address things that they didn’t catch in the Terms of Service.

What Can You Do to Help?

Honestly the best things you can do are:

  • Don't waste our time by emailing us asking for your status. We know your listing is there, we know it's taking a long time. Please, please, be patient with us. There's a lot to work to go through and we're doing it as fast as possible.
  • Know the Terms of Service agreement. It's not a document to just agree to and not read. You must know what it says to get an approval. If you don't there's a strong chance we'll find something wrong with your application.
  • Be active in the community - I can tell you right now that one of the biggest things we want to see is that you care about the community that helps you generate your business. Forum posts, extension development, writing documentation, anything you can do to help us, will make us want to help you. One hand washes the other!
  • Keep in mind that the JRD is operated entirely by volunteers. If you do have a question and you do email us, be nice! We are serving you. Listen to what we have to say and try not to give us a hard time. We realize that we're human and make errors. But we're responsible for the content on the JRD and we want it to be the best possible. Help us in this process by cooperating fully with the requirements. Many people are being admitted. You know it's not impossible, but it's not a free ride either. In short, respect us, and we will respect you as well.
