welcome... feel free to jump in with a question

  • Little^John

Why dont you introduce yourself and your respective roles in Joomla? :)

  • AndrewEddie

you want to go first jconsultingza ?

  • Little^John

    0 : 2 now

  • jconsultingza

    ouch

  • jconsultingza

I'm Jacques. I'm the Secretary of Open Source Matters

  • Artyom

Hi. I've read a few of your blog-posts.

  • TonyMontezuma

Hi friends. I'm Tony from Brasil

  • jconsultingza

    hi

  • AndrewEddie

I'm Andrew. I'm on the Production Leadership Team.

  • Little^John

    Hello

  • TonyMontezuma

I want to know why the release of JUGs is so slow?

  • jconsultingza

Tony, there been some problems in the past with getting the approvals done.

This is being looked at by the JUG team, and new members recently joined to help speed things up

  • TonyMontezuma

We made a request for JUGPR (Parana Brazil) and is taking too long

  • jconsultingza

I would encourage you to use the JUG forum to get help if it takes to long.

  • jools

Title: Joomla! View forum - Registered Joomla! User Groups (at forum.joomla.org)

  • jconsultingza

geekette mentioned there that they are busy working through the backlog

  • TonyMontezuma

I have already started asking, sorry, I should like first to thank your excellent work with Joomla

  • Little^John

Andrew, we had a short discussion earlier on the choice of database - myisam vs innodb.. Will innodb be default at some point? All the analazies I can find, points to similar speed at "normal" usages

  • AndrewEddie

Little^John: in 1.6 we've removed the engine IIRC so that it assumes your DB server's default

  • Little^John

And a bonus question .. Are there plans to support more databases? (PostgreSQL, sqlite, etc)

  • AndrewEddie

so if you configure for Inno, then your tables will be Inno

  • Little^John

Oh, wasnt aware of that. Neat :P

  • AndrewEddie

it's one of those things where people always want "the other one", so we decided not to hard set it

  • Artyom

    Little^John: http://groups.google.com/group/joomla-dev-cms/browse_thread/thread/bf9b937ff29f9b52?hl=en-GB

  • jools

Title: Porting to SQL Server - Joomla! CMS Development | Google Groups (at groups.google.com)

  • AndrewEddie

on more databases, yes, we've done everything we can to allow for people to run with extra DB connectors, it's up to the people wanting to support them now

we have a branch with experimental connectors to Oracle and MS SQL Server

so you can connect to external DB's

running Joomla natively is a little more difficult but we'll continue to tune the API as we come across issues

one of the blocking factors is you really need people with experience with these other platforms to actually do the work

if we don't have anyone with that experience, it just can't happen

  • Little^John

    True

Its not important to me, it just came out of curiosity. Thx :)

  • AndrewEddie

but I built the DB class in a way to allow the postgres guys to do something, oh, back in Mambo 4.5.1 or something

  • TonyMontezuma

I am developing a Joomla site for the city of Londrina - PR Brazil, I noticed that when we have over 1,300 items the search is very slow, is there anything I can do to improve it?

we have 10.000 pages in our portal

  • AndrewEddie

that's not surprising TonyMontezuma, the native Joomla search is not that efficient

try http://jxtended.com/extensions/finder.html - that will probably help

  • jools

Title: Advanced Search for Joomla! 1.5 - JXtended - Powerful Joomla! Extensions (at jxtended.com)

  • AndrewEddie

(disclaimer: I'm affiliated with that company)

  • TonyMontezuma

Is there a module that improves the search?

  • Little^John

There is plenty. Just have a look at the JED > http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/search-a-indexing/site-search

  • jools

Title: Site Search - Joomla! Extensions Directory (at extensions.joomla.org)

  • Little^John

jconsultingza, can you elaborate on your work? I think most ppl knows a little about Andrew, but less about OSM...

  • TonyMontezuma

@jools I know how to search and where to, just do not know if it will solve the problem.

    ok, tks

  • jconsultingza

@ Little^John: Open Source Matters is there to support the Joomla project.

  • Little^John

TonyMontezuma, lets look at that in #joomla later

  • AndrewEddie

    Jools is a bot

  • jools

AndrewEddie: Error: "is" is not a valid command.

  • jconsultingza

  • jools

    Title: About OSM (at opensourcematters.org)

  • TonyMontezuma

    kkkk ok

  • AndrewEddie

she can be annoying sometimes :)

  • Little^John

jconsultingza, What is the biggest thing in OSM at this time?

  • mlipscomb

Then she fits in w/ the rest of us very well :-)

  • AndrewEddie

    indeed :)

  • Little^John

    jconsultingza..?

  • jconsultingza

@ Little^John. We at OSM are always looking at ways to raise funds to support the project; inform people about Joomla, and guard the Trademark... It's a mix of tasks

  • Little^John

    Okay. Sounds .. challenging?

  • jconsultingza

It can be, but it keeps things interesting ;)

  • Little^John

Good thing. Fun at work makes work more fun

    ;)

  • Artyom

Are we planning to create a multilingual solution after which JoomFish and other similar extensions will be unnecessary?

  • AndrewEddie

depends on who "we" are :)

which is a good point to talk about

Mark, Louis and I are starting to draw up the "how 1.7 works"

so we'll be thinking about how things like that get decided

  • Artyom

    nice

  • AndrewEddie

one of the interesting things is marrying ideas that people want in "the next version" with people interested in doing the work

some things we are kicking around are

    * setting a theme for a release - probably using something like the dev conference we did last year in New York

  • Little^John

What is the status of the long anticipated ACL in 1.6? :P

  • AndrewEddie

    * having an ideas register and voting system that helps us triage what ideas the majority actually want as a priority

    Little^John: it's finished :)

  • Little^John

    \o/

  • AndrewEddie

it's in there, download the beta and try it

  • Little^John

Did you a prettier solution to the interface since the Melbourne conference in ... february? (i think)

    *find

  • mlipscomb

T-shirts available for expressing joy :-)

  • AndrewEddie

    no, it's very similar

  • jconsultingza

Remember that you can buy your ACL tshirt from the Joomla Shop! :) ....limited edition

    http://shop.joomla.org/

  • jools

Title: Please, click on the picture of your choice to see the product detail. (at shop.joomla.org)

  • AndrewEddie

it's a first cut, I'm sure we'll get suggestions in once the thing goes stable

yes, get your collectors edition T-shirts

    er, limited edition

  • Little^John

    lol, real nice tshirts :D

  • AndrewEddie

    looks around for backup brain

  • jconsultingza

    waiting for mine to arive

  • Elephantman-

hi :) aint got much to say, just discovered the event thanks to Little^John. But i'll take the occasion to congratulate you AndrewEddie for the really long term investment in the project, really great. Every now and again, I wonder how people who work hard on custom components (for a specific company or so) can really keep in touch with the community.

I spend my time coding away in a joomla environement, but never contribute since it's just extra work on already hard days (and work thats most surely on a different focus than everyday duty)

  • AndrewEddie

thanks Elephantman- it really is my pleasure

  • Artyom

Andrew, what is "how 1.7 works" document? Is this some kind of Specification or RFC?

  • AndrewEddie

Artyom: I'll know when it's done, but yes, it will be like an RFC or "here is our vision, what do you think"

vision for the process that is

  • Artyom

    OK. It's very nice.

Because I feel a luck of some specification for J1.6!

  • AndrewEddie

we will try hard not to repeat 1.5 and 1.6 again :)

  • Artyom

    *lack

  • AndrewEddie

they have not been easy journeys for all involved

  • jconsultingza

    but I think we have a good end-product! :)

  • Artyom

    Of course, no doubt :-)

  • jconsultingza

Personally I think I'll make the jump from 1.5.x to 1.6 a lot faster than I did from 1.1x to 1.5

  • Artyom

    So do I

  • Elephantman-

good evening boyz :) (or good day depending on where you are)

  • Little^John

Andrew, Oh, while I remember it, will there be some sort of "cron" for automated jobs in 1.6?

  • Artyom

I think that for cron jobs we need some kind of command line tool, don't we?

  • AndrewEddie

Little^John: not that I'm aware of, not in the core anyway

would be nice to have a cron manager though

  • jconsultingza

Those who are interested in supporting the Joomla project financially, will appreciate the good news in this blog post: (it 's a bit heavy reading)

    https://community.joomla.org/blogs/leadership/1216-what-happened-to-the-donation-page-revisited.html

  • jools

Title: What Happened to the Donation Page ... Revisited (at community.joomla.org)

  • Artyom

Little^John: Or do you mean not real /usr/sbin/cron?

  • Little^John

    Yes

  • Artyom

    ok

  • Little^John

An actual cron manager would be great, but it could also be done by code .. (a little more cumbersome I think)

  • snellcode

daily tasks is fairly easy, if your site gets at least 1 hit per day :p

  • Little^John

    hehe :P

  • mlipscomb

@Jacques - What are the 3 or 4 main areas those donations go to?

  • Little^John

Will 1.6/1.7 consider more logging of user/system actions?

  • Artyom

Little^John: Do you mean that some native Joomla! application should be running in endless loop and should support scheduled tasks in that way?

  • AndrewEddie

Little^John: 1.7 is really up to what people want and then finding people that want to code it

  • Artyom

I saw that trick ones in Pommo.

  • jconsultingza

@ mlipscomb It's easiest to have a look at the budget that's posted here: http://opensourcematters.org/policies/153-unaudited-financial-reports.html

  • jools

Title: Unaudited Financial Reports (at opensourcematters.org)

  • AndrewEddie

as I mentioned before, we are working on a process for that, but it will really be up to the community to run with the elbow grease to implement it

  • Little^John

AndrewEddie, any way to affect the decissions..? ;)

Artyom, not really... Lets take the examples to #joomla shall we? :)

  • AndrewEddie

Little^John: I think it will mostly be a case of if somone really wants something and has put in the effort to actually do it, it will be considered for inclusion

  • Artyom

    ok, Little^John.

  • AndrewEddie

and that will naturally have preference over an idea that nobody wants to do :)

  • Little^John

    Sounds reasonable enough :)

  • AndrewEddie

ok, well I think that wraps it up?

can't compete with the footy obviously

  • jconsultingza

    Thank you everyone

footy is done.... our keeper got redcarded!

  • Little^John

Thanks for your time. Great to chat with you both :)

  • AndrewEddie

thanks everyone for the chat :)

  • Little^John

Can one please remember to update topic with next weeks stars..? :P

  • Artyom

Yeah. Thanks. So if one have an idea and they want to implement it, is it time to include it to the list?

    I can update it.

    * I mean I can update the topic.

    later

  • jconsultingza

    bye all

  • Little^John

And for reference; Soccer game ended South Africa 0 : 3 Uruguay :P

    bye

  • Artyom

    bye

    Thanks Andrew and jconsultingza.
