Joomla! 3.3 is almost ready! The development team has been working away putting the finishing touches on the beta. The aim for this release was presented by Michael Babker at Joomla!Day Boston 2014:
"Joomla 3.3 will be the most stable Joomla! release. Ever!"
We have revised the launch timeline slightly to ensure we can get everything up to the quality levels we all would like, and to ensure thorough testing on as many hosting environments as possible.
The schedule is now as follows:
- 1 April – Beta 1
- 8 April – Beta 2
- 15 April – Release Candidate (RC)
- 22 April - Joomla 3.3 Release
A Friendly Reminder for Security Support for 3.2
The PLT is planning a 3.2 release on April 22, 2014, the same day as 3.3.0. For this release, the PLT plans to include all of the bug fixes committed after 3.2.3 into this release, enabling 3.2 users to have the most stable code base we can offer them during the extended support period.
As previously announced, 3.2 will receive extended security support through October 2014 for users on hosts who do not meet the minimum required PHP version of 5.3.10. During the extended support period users can expect:
- Security releases for 3.2 as needed
- Continued support for 2.5
- Continued support for 3.3
Users who are unable to update to 3.3 due to the new PHP requirements are able to use the one click-click update, once they update to PHP 5.3.10.
What’s new in Joomla 3.3
Joomla 3.3 brings some really important background updates to Joomla. For instance a lot of work has been done on moving from MooTools to jQuery JavaScript – this will help reduce the size of your Joomla! web site by loading just jQuery and will give all of Joomla! access to all the jQuery goodness.
Cloud Storage APIs will allow Joomla! sites to interact with Amazon S3 and other cloud storage offerings. Joomla! 3.3 also includes a new Microdata library implementation.
Microdata gives HTML a way to label content and describe specific types of information—for example, personal information, event information or other data that describes your data. Search engines can then index that data to make your site more useful to visitors. For example you could have an event and use Microdata tagging to include the location and start time of the event. Of course these are just some of the new features planned for this release.
