One Month into Multi-site

It's been over a month since Google Summer of Code 2009 kicked off and I wanted to give the community a status update on the Multi-site project. If you aren't familiar with the project you can see the project details here.

The project's development is on schedule and going well. Over the past few weeks the installer and   database configuration for multi-sites using a separate and shared setup were completed. During the past few days I have been working on the configuration loading scheme for multi-sites. This should be completed within the next few days. Following this, I will be attempting to simplify some of the multi-site configuration options. Currently the component requires knowledge of the Joomla database structure and understanding of each table's purpose. The goal is make this simple enough for any user to be able to setup a multi-site environment.

I hopefully should have an early alpha release available next week, and will be anxious to hear your feedback.

Please keep checking back for updates!

  1. Thank You Joomla, Naveen Gavini and GSC for making this happen. I have been waiting for a good Joomla Multi Site solution for a long time.
  2. hey,

I would know if it will work on cluster & load balancing systems : we will be interested to have one joomla code on multi http/https servers and one mysql server.

    regards

  3. This goes beyond what most will ever use. I needed something similar once and the Virtual Domains component worked just fine for what I needed. This definitely should not be built-in to Joomla, but a separate set on components and plug-ins that should be required to install a multi-site. It would just add so much extra code and overhead that is really not needed for the average site.
  4. This interest me as well :)
  5. According to the reviews, there is a good Commercial soliton... Joomla Multi Sites and User Sharing
    http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/core-enhancements/multiple-sites/5550/details

He claims to have a customer running 1300 sites from a single Joomla install.

    Take care,
    Jeff Sohler
  6. Good suggestion yveslouis! very interesting for small user where you can set up this for different hostings and CDN systems.
  7. I am very excited about this project, great idea everyone!!! 8-)
  8. Will it make possible to install multiple instances of components/modules?
  9. User sharing between multiple sites can be a great advantage. Looking forward to it!!!
  10. I know that warner brothers records runs over 100 drupal sites on one drupal instance (well two actually) and found that drupal multisite was far too restrictive to handle the sites.

The biggest problem I have with a mere twenty sites on one joomla instance is finding all the entry points. It is much better in 1.5 than 1.0 but I would love it if there were exactly two entry points. index.php and administrator/index.php

If you are hosting many sites you already are doing enough administrating that setting up multisite is almost part of your security lockdown and backup plan.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with as wordpress multisite is a great product.
  11. We like to known it is free and if possible to get it.

And "is better than duplicate the joomla master" ?
