sh404SEF is the New JED Editors Pick
Written by Steve Burge
If you've been visiting the Joomla Extensions Directory for a while, you may have noticed that the eight Editors' Picks haven't been updated often. The only recent addition has been Joomla Tools Suite by Russ Winter.
Today we're happy to say that a ninth extension has been added: sh404SEF by Yannick Gaultier.
What does sh404SEF do?
- Rewrites Joomla's URLs so that site administrators have complete control. This is important for search engines but also for people moving to Joomla who don't want to break their old URLs.
- Solves several accessibility problems to help users with disabilties read a Joomla site.
- Provides a valid 404 page for people who access your site using a broken URL.
- Adds a security layer to prevent certain hacking attempts.
- Can control a site's metadata, allowing people to add page titles, language tags, indexing instructions and more.
Why was sh404SEF chosen?
- It meets all the basic criteria we look for when recommending extensions to JED users ... its free to download, well-supported, works on both 1.0 and 1.5 and almost all types of server, including IIS.
- Since its launch in May 2007, the developer has consistently worked to improve the code and add new features.
- Its compatible with a very wide range of other extensions, including VirtueMart, Joomfish, Fireboard, Community Builder, mosetsTree, HotProperty, Sobi2, Docman, myBlog, Remository and more.
Do you have any suggestions for the next Editor's Pick?
If so, we'd love to hear from you in the comments:

I am wondering why Mosets Hot Property that lowly rank is still on Editor's Pick? Not that I am against Mosets but I believe the directory that powered JED is Mosets Tree?
So my suggestion switch Mosets Hot Property to Mosets Tree. There are so many reasons for this and some of good ones I could think of are:
i) Mosets Tree has a more "general" look of Joomla directory component. Mosets Hot Property leave an impression that it's only for Property type of website.
ii) Mosets Tree has more users therefore much more frequently updated compared to Mosets Hot Property.
iii) Mosets Tree is the one that powered JED.
Hopefully Steve will consider this suggestion.
and oh, yeah I am one of mosets user.

Most of all, sh404sef's plugins for most of the components are outdated and buggy. I'd suggest the developer to take more time to develop plugins for components. However that seems to happen with all SEF components. Developer create awesome components which work well with Joomla's content but not with Joomla's components. On the other side developers of J's components should offer sh404sef's plugins with their products. For not speaking of some developers who already stopped supporting J1.0.x. It's all a mess out there.

Hi phreak. Glad to hear you're donating! It really is almost a full-time job for Yannick.
Hi Supergoofy. Agreed, it is a bit of minefield. The ideal situation I guess would be if extension developers maintained the sef_ext.php files as they know their components best.

I'd also like to see Sobi2 added as the next JED editor's pick. It is the best free directory / listing component available and I prefer it to the commercial components I have tried. Anyone who has used Sobi2 in depth will appreciate all of the advanced functionality available.

Basically S4J Remote Admin is an inline editor that allows you to sync with your website and work "offline", until you're ready to publish, a.k.a. synchronize, your changes to your Joomla! website.
