When you visit www.joomla.org you might not notice any differences, but last weekend the website was successfully migrated from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 2.5. This fall Joomla 1.5 will reach the 'end of life' status and the version will no longer be supported by the Joomla project. So it is important to join us in upgrading your Joomla websites to the latest version this summer!

You can upgrade your Joomla 1.5 website by using one of the available migration extensions in the Joomla Extensions Directory. Migrating the Joomla 1.5 core to version 2.5 is not that hard, it mostly depends on the extensions and template you are using on your website. Check carefully if 2.5 versions are available, if you can migrate the extension during the core migration or if you need to replace the extension.

In case of the joomla.org website we did not need to migrate all extensions in use. Joomla 2.5 offers a great set of new features and possibilities in the core that we could use as replacement. For example the new redirect component and module layout variations for small output modifications. We were also able to maintain the URL structure of the website, so all links are still working.

Next to the joomla.org website the Joomla project has several other Joomla installations.  Soon we will blog about the timeline for the other websites that are using Joomla 1.5 at the moment. You can also expect a blog with some great migration resources that will help you migrating your own Joomla 1.5 website(s) this summer. And last but not least, a great team is working on improvements on the Joomla homepage, we hope to roll out these changes in the upcoming weeks!
