Over the last couple months the Global Moderators have discussed what to do with the Joomla! Member of the Month award. As a group, we came up with some great ideas on how to improve it and more importantly, get more participation. We love being able to reward community members who help out in the community. We have found that there are a couple problems with the current process and would like to ask all of you to help us think this through. 226,357 heads are better than 7.

Quick Facts:

  • Started in February 2007.
  • There have been 20 JMotM recipients.
  • Last month, there were zero nominations.
  • During the last Vote, we received 16 total votes.

As stated before, we love the idea of rewarding community members for their good deeds. While, we would like to thank everyone for their participation in our community, spotlighting one is a good way to show our appreciation.

The problems are these:

  • Lack of Nominations: Lately, the Global Moderators have been nominating (hand picking) the people that we think should the Joomla! Member of the Month. This is not how we envisioned this process. We want the community to nominate people for this award.
  • Lack of Votes: the 16 votes we got last month is not a good indication of the community as a whole.

So, there you have it. Please comment back with your ideas so that we can make this process better. The idea of rotating each month between, "Member", "Extensions", and "Website" has been suggested. I guess that means that each month, we would be voting on "Member of the Season" or "Member of the Quarter". … and the same for "Extension" and "Website". We are not looking for "rules" at this point, just ideas. The rules would come later. Any thoughts?
