The Joomla! Community Showcase ™

Site Profile

Description: FellowFishermen.com is a social networking web site for fishermen, but it offers a lot more than any simple community web site.
Members can show off their catches, share fishing photos and videos, and find new places to go fishing with interactive maps. Members can also submit business listings for fishing charters, guides, trips and tackle shops, browse these business listings by type or by interactive maps, check their local fishing weather report, write their own fishing blogs, create groups and keep in touch with members of their fishing clubs, make new friends, and much much more.

FellowFishermen.com is the first web site to bring Web 2.0 and social media to world-wide and local fishing communities, making it easier than ever for fishermen across the world to come together socially.

FellowFishermen.com is connected to Twitter and automatically sends tweets about fish its members catch. A full Facebook application is in the works so members can show off their catches to all of their Facebook friends. An iPhone application is also underway, which will allow iPhone owners to find catch locations, add their catches, browse fishing information, and much more.
Case Study: FellowFishermen.com has been an idea in the back of my mind for a few years. The Joomla project was a crucial part of building the site because of its power, flexibility, and customization. The site was originally going to be built in Ruby on Rails, but it was not a priority because it would have taken so long to build from scratch. But with Joomla and existing extensions like JomSocial, MyBlog and Sobi2, most of the heavy lifting was already done. The site still took about six months to fully customize and develop, but was a lot of fun to build and turned out better than what I had originally planned.
