We wanted to completely redevelop and update the reference, migrating from a CD-ROM to web-based platform. There were only 2 months available for development time in early 2009. After testing several CMS's, we took Joomla out for a spin, and were thoroughly impressed! The user-friendly interface, CMS capabilities, ability to customize themes and any configuration file, and an incredible extensions resource made our CMS choice clear.
With over 25 extensions, the final result was well beyond what we thought possible, with such limited development resources. The entire CD-ROM was migrated over, a new CMS was learned, and all extensions incorporated in under 160 work hours. Truly a cost-effective and very efficient project.
The user is treated with a very slick interface, with numerous "Web 2.0" features, such as the ability to interact with any article by commenting, quoting, forwarding to friends, or posting on any of over 12 social network sites. Random content appears. Multiple languages available. Rotating ads. Guestbook. Polling. Numerous Search enhancements. Section-sensitive graphical headers. Tabbed articles. And more. We were so pleased to add features we hadn't even thought of, simply by strolling through the Joomla Extensions area.
Our final thought to share with you is the incredible drive and passion of the Joomla userbase. We contacted several developers regarding extensions issues and were pleased to have such quick responses and dedication to solving problems. One developer even custom-coded a portion of their extension, to accommodate our needs.
