The Joomla! Community Showcase ™

Site Profile

Description: Soroptimist International (SI) of the South West Pacific (SISWP) is a world-wide organisation for women in management and the professions working through service projects to advance human rights and the status of women. Soroptimists work at all levels of civil society, local, national and international, and are involved with a wide spectrum of women's concerns.Case Study: SISWP needed a new website that would function not just as a place to learn about the organisation but also as a place for the organisation to start to collaborate in the online world. The site needed to have both a public and private area and also be scaleable in terms of future functionality. Being a non-profit, volunteer organisation, there was only a shoestring budget.

Target Audience:

External – Potential New Members, Other Women’s Organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations, Students, Politicians, etc.

Internal – Headquarters, Federation, Region, Clubs and Members.

Access Control:

A sophisticated access control system has been incorporated to mimic the organisational structure. Certain members have access to creating/updating certain content areas with inheritance of rights. All members have view rights. Rights are easilu transferable annually as those performing roles within the organisation change.

Joomla was selected early in the process for its ability to match the requirements. At the time, version 1.5 wasn’t available.

A number of components, modules and plug-ins have being installed including (but not limited to): JACL Plus, DeepPockets, DocMan, Chrono Forms, JCE and sh404SEF.

Our preference would have been to use core access control, which really was the most significant requirement of the project, but it wasn’t available.

The site was launched in March 2009 and so far is holding up well. Positive feedback is being fielded from members with some also providing suggestions for improvement.

The Joomla community has been terrific in its help along the way and we have tried to share some of our experiences in relevant forum threads.

We are already planning what functionality we will be adding in phase 2.
