The goal was to provide a highly dynamic website that integrated with many different web services to provide a unified view of distributed data.
Many different CMS packages were evaluated and Joomla came out on top. It was chosen specifically for it's ease of extension, and the ease of creating new modules and components. One of the main concerns of choosing with Joomla was performance, specifically in terms of database load and page rendering times. Despite this, Joomla was still considered the best candidate (and these concerns were eventually addressed in code directly).
The site is built on top of Joomla 1.5 and with a few off the shelf components as well as many custom modules/components that were built specifically for the site. Many of the custom modules provide seamless integration with many different web services, including Flickr, Facebook, Constant Contact, Cafe Press, Google Maps, Google Calendar, Google Analytics, Addthis, iTunes and Youtube.
The timeline for this website, including design, approval, mocks and implementation was well over a year in length, but given that Joomla made the development so straightforward, using another CMS would have taken a few more months at least to provide the same functionality.
