Site ProfileDescription: An internationally renowned art museum and one of the most significant architectural icons of the 20th century, the Guggenheim Museum is at once a vital cultural center, an educational institution, and the heart of an international network of museums. Visitors can experience special exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, lectures by artists and critics, performances and film screenings, classes for teens and adults, and daily tours of the galleries led by experienced docents. Founded on a collection of early modern masterpieces, the Guggenheim Museum today is an ever-growing institution devoted to the art of the 20th century and beyond.
The Foundation website that Miller has designed similarly acts as front door or gateway to the five museums. A simple menu bar at the top of the site allows for navigation between locations and the Foundation itself. Within the individual museum sites the navigation is more complex, reflecting the unusually deep content of the sites, which allow visitors to browse the online collections of each museum. A blog-like editorial format is used for news of current exhibitions, events and activities.
The new Guggenheim site has been named the best cultural institution website in this year’s Webby Awards.Case Study: The Challenge:
Elevate the Guggenheim as a recognized leader among international visual arts institutions in order to increase visits, support donations and membership and build awareness for the Guggenheim Foundation.
The Game Plan
Create an online destination for all the Guggenheim's various audiences (visitors, enthusiasts, educators, donors, press, etc.) that focuses on art and enables the user to efficiently complete tasks that will bring them closer to The Guggenheim.
The Play by Play
From the creation of new information architecture and design to the development of the web site with a comprehensive content management system that allows non-technical staff to manage all web site content and updates, IDS not only met the goals of the Guggenheim, they exceeded them. The site included such features as a robust calendar, the ability to perform detailed searches, the linking of all the international Guggenheim web sites and much more added functionality.
Mirroring the museum's simple and clean design aesthetic, IDS created a beautiful canvas on which to showcase the Guggenheim's renowned collections.
