Google Summer of Code 2008 Completions

Check out these great extensions!

Written by Wilco Jansen

The 2008 edition of Summer of Code was exciting, even before it started. This year we had a stunning number of projects. There were 15 projects funded, which is more than any previous year of this great summer event.

This year we approached the program differently, starting with program management. We asked Ian MacLennan to co-lead this year's edition. With so many projects, we worked to get in enough mentors in order to provide each student with proper guidance. I am very pleased with how well things have worked out. The success rate this year was 66%, which is good.

The results some of the students have created are really amazing. Please take time to read the detailed blogs for these students. Also, take a look at those project that have been published on Joomlacode, these projects really are a great addition to all that is already out there to build great Joomla sites!

I really want to thank all the mentors for guiding the students and putting that much (free) time. Also a very big thank you to all the students. This year, they not only worked on their projects, but they also provided us with regular updates using the blog facilities on the Joomla Developer site. Last, but not least, I also want to thank the Communications Team, and especially Amy Stephen for her great work on collecting all details of the projects and motivating everyone in this years edition to "talk" about their projects.

Joomla!'s Successful Google Summer of Code Projects for 2008

And, of course, very special thanks to each student who shared your summer, and your skills, and your vision with us. It was an honor to have you participate in the 2008 Joomla! Google Summer of Code. We hope you learned and had a great time, too.
