Quick, rapid, fast, speedy and custom
That is in blazing speed explained what a Joomla! template is and I hope this gives you the basis to start building your own template from scratch using the “Joomla_base” template as a guideline.
The most important thing to remember is again “don’t be afraid to try,” you’ll learn by trying and trying again.
Change and refresh the site front-end after a change and see what happens:
- Change color codes in your CSS files
- Change heights, widths, paddings, margins, float: from left to right
- Move div blocks around in the index.php file
- Do whatever you can think off
The index.php and CSS files are full of comments explaining what different parts do, you can remove them when you put a template on a real site.
The template uses none of the Joomla! core CSS classes or id’s because right now it shows that basically any HTML/CSS design can be used as a Joomla! template.
Download the source used in this tutorial
- Download the template pack
- Download the demo data (import in a Joomla! database)
- All Joomla! core CSS id’s and classes listed
- The Joomla! template forum
Happy templating all!
Oh and here is the result I did for Jessica, and it took me just a few hours to build the basic site. While she added content in the next few days I did some fine-tuning on the CSS styles.
Now, the only thing left is a Million Dollar Wedding. What a cool thing that Joomla! is a part of this Sander and Jessica's experience. Wish them good luck!

I just completed this tutorial, and I set-up my first "from scratch" template. I must say I agree with you... building your own design code is way better and faster. I used to work over off-the-shelf templates, but spent most of my time figuring-out where things were through trial & error.
Many thanks for your help here:
Here is a link to the site I just built using this very tutorial:

I look forward to any new articles you might write in the future
