Explore the Front End and Back End
Now we're ready to have some fun. In Joomla!, we talk about the "front end" and "back end". The front end is what the user of the website will see when browsing the site. The back end is the set of screens that the administrator (that's you!) will use to build and maintain the site. We installed Joomla! in a directory called "joomla155sample". To navigate to the front end, we just point our browser to the URL "http://localhost/joomla155sample". You should see the screen below:

To navigate to the back end, just add "/administrator" to the end of the front-end URL -- in our example, "http://localhost/joomla155sample/aministrator". You will get a login screen, as shown below:

When you installed Joomla!, a user called "admin" was created for you with the password you entered in during step 6 of the installation wizard. Use that username and password to log in, and you should see the screen shown below:

At this point, take a minute to explore the front end and back end. The front end is a working website with a lot of useful content about Joomla!. In the back end, you see seven menus across the top, each with multiple options underneath. Also in the back end, notice the "Preview" link in the upper right corner. That allows you to open the front end of the site in a separate browser tab or window.

I also want to mention that we have had a remarkable development in JED. We started with 334 extension in March 2006. For one year ago we had reached 2299 extensions and yesterday we passed for the first time 4000 extensions.

Take these away from the statistics and I would like to see the complete trend of genuinely new extensions to the directory. It would be more accurate.

My only reservation is that I have followed the Quick Start Guide to the word... and it told me not to install the Sample site. Now I'm stuck in gaining the best experience form this tutorial!

How do I add a new position in the middle center of the page just below My First Article? Currenlty, the only spot there is "banner" and whatever I put there shows on every single other page. I downloaded JoomGallery and would like the gallery thumbnails to appear below My First Article and only appear on the homepage and no other pages. Please help!
Thanks,!
