Joomla! Community Magazine - Learning

Works as designed, but not necessarily as expected...

(for those non-Australian's out there, translate to; “Gee... It didn't do what I thought it would...")

Well, if any of you have seen some of my posts in the forum, you know that when I get on a roll, man. I can post some dooozies... So the plan is to deliver a series of articles in collaboration with a number of other Joomla! experts and well-known characters that relate to Site Planning, Integrity, Security and Maintenance over the coming months. For some of you, these might be a little basic, while others might find them to be worth the time spent reading them, we hope it will be the latter.

By way of an introduction for those that might not know me and to re-acquaint myself with those that do. I am Russ Winter, I live in Melbourne, Australia and have been around Joomla! for a couple of years now, you can commonly find me in the forums under the name of RussW. I tend to hangout in the Installation and Security forums mostly, but have been known to peruse the rest of the forums on occasion, I am probably best know for my odd sense of humour but can occasionally post something useful. I have most been recently been involved with the development of the Joomla! Tools Suite project and have been fortunate enough to also have been invited to join the newly formed Joomla! Security Strike Team (JSST).

Security, Integrity and Maintenance is an absolutely huge topic and is easily one of the biggest mine fields for new hands and experienced community members alike, over the coming months I will endeavour, with the help of many of the Joomla! experts and well known characters, to dispel some of the misunderstandings and urban myths, whilst also trying to simplify some of the hype and complexities of the topic.

Topics that are currently on the list to be covered are:

 • Joomla! Site planning and preparation
 • The meaning of “writable”
 • Common hosting provider configurations
 • Unix permissions and ownership issues
 • Backup and recovery best practices
 • Site lock down techniques and methods
 • Joomla! maintenance and upgrades procedures
 • Third party tools and utilities to assist the cause

and along the way.... why Australia is just so kewl...

The folks of the Joomla! Community Magazine and the JSST are looking forward to delivering this series of articles to you and hope you will find them useful and informative over the period.

Catch you in the forums

RussW

 1. sounds great Russ,...can't wait!
 2. The topics you are planning to publish are more than interesting. I think there is a broad audience waiting for more details about the Unix permission issues or upgrades procedures.
 3.
I am probably best know for my odd sense of humour but can occasionally post something useful.
Odd humor yes sometimes, Occasionally post something useful? Most of what I have read is useful. Look forward to your articles.
 4. These issues are HUGE, as anyone who's been mucking around in Joomla knows. Look forward to the articles!
 5. I have been using CMS's since Nuke and before. We have standardized on Joomla and now migrated http://www.pizza.net to version 1.57 and we are really excited about the components and companies that are supporting Joomla. I need all the help I can get for www.pizza.net and when you go there and your favorite pizza restaurant is not there please add it or tell them about us. Our database is pretty complete for the US but the rest of the world is very sparse. We do have a few from down under. We will have an iPhone app being released soon and everything is being feed from the Joomla site. Thank You Joomla Team You are doing a great Job
 6. Thanks for you
 7. Australia does seem very kewl. I've read some Australian blogs to learn more about her and most of those writers want to come here to Southern California, USA. I want to go there.
 8. Maybe two categories - Common hosting provider configurations and Unix permissions and ownership issues, needs to make together in one?
 9. I love the planned list. I wonder if you'd consider adding "site performance tuning" to your plans? We've been converting our church website from hand-coded HTML to Joomla, and our load time has gone from a couple of seconds to 30 seconds. We're using the standard Milkyway template, and I'm not sure what to do. Our team could sure use some help on that, and I'll be others could too. (We're hosted on Dreamhost.)
 10. i was watching your post on joomla forums because of Joomla! Tools Suite. the topics that you mention are useful points for all people who has Joomla web sites. i will expectantly wait your next post
 11. That's a good list but can I suggest an additional one? Content organisation - it's the content & how easy it is to find/navigate that makes or breaks a site. I personally think that the move away from static content in 1.5 was a good one, but Sections & Categories still require considerable thought and raise awkward questions (should a single page belong to a unique section or another category, etc?).
