Joomla! Forum Member of the Month for June 2008

Anthony Ferrara

Written by Ken Crowder

Those heavily involved in the Joomla! community know who Anthony Ferrara is, but most of you probably have no idea. Besides being the Joomla! Member of the Month for June 2008, Anthony is also the Joomla! Bug Squad Team Lead and on the Development Team. He is one of the fine folks that work on the Core code base that we all love.

This Blog post enticed me to "sit down" with Anthony over Skype and discuss his involvement further.

Me: Can you describe your official involvement in the Joomla! project?

Anthony: From an official standpoint, I'm a development workgroup member. I am also team lead on the Bug Squad.

Me: What about your unofficial involvement in the Joomla! project?

Anthony: I've heard it said that I am "The" performance expert for Joomla, but I don't feel that way... I don't feel I'm an expert in anything... I just know how to analyze my options.

Me: How long have you been working on joomlaperformance.com?

Anthony: That was a pet project that was launched in August of 2007. I was providing performance tools/information to the public on ircmaxell.com since April of 2007. I've been privately working on 1.0.x performance since mid 2006.

Me: What do you do for a full time job?

Anthony: I'm a professional php developer and Myself Database Administrator

Me: Your avatar makes you look like a Fire Fighter. What's the story behind that?

Anthony: I'm a volunteer firefighter in town. I've been a member since May 2003. I'm also a SwiftWater Rescue Specialist

Me: Any medical training?

Anthony: Yes, I'm also an EMT-B.

Me: If you could have dinner with any three people dead or alive, who would it be?

Anthony: Albert Einstein, John Nash, and Leonardo da Vinci.

Me: Where do you see your involvement in the next 3 years in Joomla! community?

Anthony: I can see myself continuing to contribute to what we call now the Bug Squad, and helping contribute to development.

"Anthony exemplifies the Joomla! community spirit by having a love of learning and an endless patience in helping others. I can't think of someone more deserving the award." Louis Landry, Joomla! Project Manager

"He's a really positive, patient and encouraging person. He really cares about doing things the right way and that shows in his forum posts and his work in Joomla! Bug Squad. He really listens to people." – Elin Waring, Open Source Matters President

  1. Also, don't forget to add the Security RSS Feed to your Joomla! Administratin Sites' Control Panel;

    http://docs.joomla.org/Security_and_Performance_FAQs#How_can_I_add_the_Joomla.21_Security_Announcements_Feed_to_the_Admin_Control_Panel.3F
  2. That is indeed good news. But it's never going to get to 100% for a whole host of reasons.

I wonder how many website administrators thare are out there given that there are so many Joomla websites?
Also how many orphan websites that aren't being activly maintained anymore?

  3. Just 5 thousand?! Joomla has millions of downloads and just 5 thousand people are interested in security stuff?! I find this unbelievable. I thought they were more.. Anyway, you are doing a great work. After all, you can`t force ppl to be interested in their sites security...
  4. While Joomla has been downloaded millions of times, you have to remember that it hasn't been downloaded by millions of people. 5,000 subscribers may actually count for a much more significant number of websites.
