Great things happening in the Translations Workgroup
Written by Pete Coutts
Pete Coutts has been an active contributor in the Joomla! community since 2003 when he first started using Mambo. In this piece, he shares the latest advancements from the Translations Team Workgroup. If you are interested in helping translate Joomla! into your language, this is the team to get involved with. Thanks, Pete, for the update!
Now, let's get some good points out. If you follow the Forums frequently then you might also have seen this White Paper proposal from Jean-Marie, aka Infograf768. It's a pity we can't tell you when this will go in to the core distribution, but we can tell you, this will extend our loved CMS out for all of us.
What will it do? Well, it will give you the flexibility like you already have with the Template Override function. It enables you to build your own language strings and even better, without the need to take care of Core Updates anymore! How it works, well, about the same as Template overrides.
Other great things have already happened, with the release of the Joomla! 1.5.6 Jens-Christian Skibakk, aka Jenski, and Rune Rasmussen, aka Rued, worked on a patch which will make it possible to install both Frontend and Backend Language Packs with just one move. A simple change within the .XML file is needed to achieve the both files are getting installed in just one action. Iindeed an outstanding improvement for the Joomla! Sphere!

We can also think about an extension which can modify the .ini language files of each extension
