How's that new site design eh?

Don't you just love it: www.joomla.org

I just wanted to say a public thanks to Louis, Ron and others on the team who have worked so hard to make this new site happen. They have been working overtime (more than 12 hours a day recently I estimate) to bring this kind of amazing work to the community. Make sure you check out the new sites and it's many new features and sections.

If you see any of them around, make sure you say thanks.

Primarily of course, this site is for people who have not heard of Joomla before, for the the rest us, we have community.joomla.org Make sure you keep putting it to good use. When will this site receive the new design? I can't wait.

... and if you want to be apart of all this, there is one new page you should see: http://www.joomla.org/about-joomla/contribute-to-joomla.html

Enjoy!

  1. Wow, great design!! Thanks to all who worked on this amazing template!
  2. Congrats all, good job. Nice to see 1.5 at work and a new design; It must have been quite a job to migrate all the 1.x content across, now wonder so many hours were put in.

Once again many thanks to one and all.
  3. its terrific!!!
  4. The site design is, beside the eye candy that is not "measurable", very bad, because an all over "first things first" feature is missing: there is no site-search box that could be used immediately. This is a major webdesign-sin and I am quite surprised to be confronted with such a "mindbug" on a website for a CMS - how can one forget this?
  5. Besides that I found another two things that would me make fire our developer, if he did that:

    1. the site is not valid code, see validator.w3.org, it even produces xml parsing errors - ridicolous!

    2. you have no redirect from joomla.org to www.joomla.org - that shows major incompetence regarding SEO and the "duplicate content" problem.

Sounding very harsh and unfriendly is not meant personally - but as yourself are not aware of these thing it is quite obvious that you will duplicate these errors with every downoad of joomla to your even more incompetent users - therefor you are RESPONSIBLE for doing things RIGHT and should think twice before releasing something to the world.

xml errors and not beeing seo friendly by deafult is simply not a good thing nowadays and I would not let students pass with such results. so please go an make your homework - just try a little bt harder.
  6. I love it!
  7. Great design i like it!.
  8. The design is great. I am a graphic designer myself and I have to say a GREAT job! Looking forward to see the other parts redesigned :)
  9. I love this new look it is so professional, this shows exactly how committed the Joomla development team are to professionalism, kudos guys
  10. The new design is great! Modern, well organized, clean.. you made it!
  11. Nice and fresh! Good job!
  12. What a nice surprise! Look great, very fresh and clean!
  13. Great design and marked improvement. Well done.
  14. Very refreshing indeed! Great work. Thanks to everyone for making it happen.

    Cheers,
    Ingu
  15. Love the new look. Looks so much better.
  16. that's the rich content and usefull design.
    thx for ur good jobs.
  17. that's the rich content and usefull design.
    thx for ur good jobs.
  18. Hmmmm...I do really like the design except the fact that it is so obvious that the background foggy-light effect was an idea taken from Obama's campaign website.

  19. Hmmmm...I do really like the design except the fact that it is so obvious that the background foggy-light effect was an idea taken from 0bama's campaign website.
  20. Thanks to everything who worked on this new look! It is GREAT!!
  21. How does it look.... what are you kidding me...the front page rocks.... I love it ... only problem that I have is I wis you would make the Joomla08 template available to those of us not as talented as you.

    looks great ....
  22. Looks GREAT ... love it ... please make template available.
  23. E.G. - Good point on the importance of validation! Now, bear in mind that the site is presenting old, non-standard markup in the articles. Now that there is a clean design, care must be taken by those of us who write articles. Also, don't forget on the No-WWW issue that it can be completely managed from an SEO perspective using Google Webmaster services now. ~*~ Ron and Louis - The site is immeasurably better than before. I am so impressed with the simplicity of navigation. Case in point, the download page. FINE work and very much appreciated.
  24. Great design indeed, keep up the good work and greetings from Romania :)
  25. I love the new look!!! Does this mean the old template will be GPL'ed?
  26. I really like the color choices and the new layout. What I like the most though is the new magazine. I wonder what component they use to display the content?

    Great Work guys.

  27. What an improvement! This is such an awesome design, I can't wait until the other sites receive the same treatment. For so long I showed people the Joomla! websites and often got a "That looks ok.." reply. But this looks awesome.

Great job, guys! You've now stepped into that realm where you're showing the power of design that Joomla! has.
  28. Looks realy nice!! Well done
Brad, you should have locked the guys in the cellar by bred and water, you would might have the whole site's in the new Design by now :)
    Cheers, and well Done Folks!!!
  29. Mmmmm...
Nice new design for the homepage but...
What happened to all the content you culled? Years of Joomla News pages gone into the ether... Seems a great shame as it was a huge and valable resource - now just a morass of 404 error pages...
Google does not like it when content is removed. would have been better to archive it at least.
  30. Congrats on the new site guys.

    I've got 2 notes however:

    1. The site's title is "Home". It'd be best if it was "Joomla!" at least.
    2. The RSS feed on Announcements is broken, so no news via RSS for any new releases/news from j.org.

    Cheers.
  31. W00t! I love it. It is epiclly awesome!
  32. datz gr8!!
  33. Nice fresh look! I was pleasantly surprised to see the design change. Nice job!
  34. So, when can we have this template for download...
  35. Looks freakin sweet! Good job!
  36. Greeeeeeatttt!!
  37. I think there is a problem on the template, for some reason I can't see the download image; I'm running Firefox 3.0.1 on a Gentoo
  38. I love this!
  39. Hi

Wow this is great, clean and easy navigation. Could be good to have a search box thou…

    Thanks for all hard work!!
  40. I certainly like the look and feel of the new site, but a few things irk me.

Nowhere on the page does it give a clear indication of what Joomla actually is, a new visitor to the site would not have a clue. I also have to mirror the comments about the site not being compliant, if this is the flagship site then is should be better than all others.

And why not do a complete site wide implementation of the template and not just the homepage. Its like painting one door of your truck a different color than the rest of the vehicle.

Anyway minor grips keep up the good work!
  41. Good work on a job well done! Two thumbs up! :)
  42. Absolutely AMAZAZING!
  43. Looking good! About time we had something new to look at :P (jk) looks great!
  44. Very very good...migration J!1.5 perfect
  45. I think the design rocks, great job. In response to some of the OTHER comments, you got to be freaking kidding me that your gonna nit pick over some validation or some missing features. I've seen validation errors and more on Google's own sites, you can't expect things of this nature to be done right the first time. Most of us don't have the luxury of time when it comes to pushing live sites out the door.

I say keep up the great work and just keep doing the best you can. Ignore the validation / SEO Nazis!
  46. This is a Very, Very Good Job! (note the caps!)

It brightens the User experience, It eases the navigation and is very smart for the eyes. If this is 'a taste' of waht to come I cannot wait for the other 'dishes' ;)

Thank you for all the excellent efforts and contributions.

    I do Applaud YOU!

    Leolam
  47. This new fresh template is clean and beautiful... Design is good. Good job..
  48. I love the new look--very clean and professional looking. Joomla never released the old design template as far as I know, so I doubt they'll release this one either.

I'm looking forward to having the rest of the sections also have this template applied--the lack of visual consistency across extensions, forum, shop, developer, etc is a bit confusing. Hopefully that will be done sooner rather than later. :)

    Great work!
  49. I love it! Will the theme be available in the next update? (Hint, hint)
  50. It's about freakin time! Looks great!
  51. Great work, team! Thanks especially to those devs you tirelessly work to better the J image and product!
  52. it is look great and clean design. but, at the left background is some problem appearing with opera 9.5
  53. it's a nice start to a new design, nothing more. Few advices : the homepage shows off-centered (to the right) so users have to scroll right and back to read everything. (I'm using 1024x768 as default screen setting). I don't like using different styles/layouts for submenu-pages because that cripples consistency of the website.
Still : these are "minor" issues so keep up the renewal efforts.
  54. I thought for one horrid second you'd sold out to a corporate!!! very swish...
  55. I like old template. It was nice, clean and unique.
By the way, fix your Link Texttemplate. It is falling apart in IE6 and WinXP.
"Welcome to the Joomla! Community Portal" text overlaps at the bottom. Some problems with background on right top and bottom corner and problems with border at the right side. Can't upload screenshot to show exactly. These problems should be easy fixable with fixed width template.
You are following common misconception, that it is possible to do CSS based layout for more than a couple of very basic cases. Default Joomla 1.5 template suffers from similar problems. It is surprising and it's a shame that Default template has problems. People are using it as a guideline for their own development.
  56. unfortunately I do not share your enthusiasm.

I Understand your reason behind the changes in the home page
was to make this page more accessible to new users, but if that was the case why didn't you go all the way with it, making all the homepage new user oriented.

currently I feel this is a hybrid between the old design and the new concept, something in the middle. And for me this change is actually a step back from the old one.

I do appreciate all the hard work invested in the new design, but I give this criticism as my honest opinion on the change.
  57. I must say that the new template looks really slick and professional.

Not being compliant could be considered a bit of a problem but no one would be so churlish that they complained on the first day. Second day, well fair enough.

Surely everybody in the whole world knows about Joomla! so there is no need whatsoever to actually say what Joomla! is and does. That would be wasting space and we wouldn't want to do that on one of the most valuable pages on the Internet now would we?

    Nick
  58. Very nice layout and design. The blue brings out the corporate feel. The new landing page now has more information and links to other parts of the website. It is a great demonstration on what Joomla can achieve.

One minor design issue I noticed: the layout don't seems to fix into screen resolution of 1024 x 768. Horizontal scrollbars appeared on my IE7/WinXP. Perhaps the designers may want to fine tune the layout abit?

Overall, great improvement! Can't wait to see the rest of Joomla sites change! (Will missed the old design though :) )
  59. Hi very nice, I like it, using ie 6 and it does not quite sit in the middle, the spacing to the right is not there, needs an ie 6 fix :) and also png ie6 fix, logo not transparent, cheers
  60. I was a little surprised. I was used to the old one and navigating to what I needed. It looks slick. Mahalo for all the time you guys put in!
  61. Nice looking job! I certainly appreciate how much effort goes into all this. Thanks to everyone that's involved for all the hard work.
  62. looks great I love it!
  63. Sparkles!
  64. creatively great new joomla.org site! i could'nt imagine the extent that joomla has gone through, my kudos to all for making a realization a dream come true.. cheers!!
  65. wow great design!! Congratulation! to Louis, Ron and others on the team who have worked so hard to make this new site happen. We love Joomla!
  66. It's really amazing. Also it's very nice to have an overview of the different areas all in one on the first page. Looks really good. Good job.
  67. Yah... that's a good move and a great design. I also like the 1st part above for smart and fast oriantation to the 3 parts. Below for each importend subject new items.

    Great!
  68. I also noticed that there's a horizontal scroll bar on my 1024px screens, that's the only major thing that spoils the design IMHO, other than that it's a nice change. When are lot going to get all the other Joomla sites switched over then? ;)
  69. Hot... :)
  70. Well, it's been said enough i think, reading the previous comment.

But i'll say it again: great new site. Well done.

    cheers
  71. I liked the previous design better but I didn't like the blog area in the front page (ugly!) Current design is not bad but VERY COMMON looking layout! (its just plain)

Think about how yahoo redesign their website. While keeping the main concept and design, they slightly made it sleeker. When I see the new joomla.org design, I thought it was hacked!! anyway.. just my concern! take care guys!

    Minz
  72. Why isn't there a prominent description of what Joomla is? There's absolutely no clue on the front page that Joomla might be a CMS, it's ambiguous to say the least.

Why the alternating font sizes and light-coloured links? Very difficult to read or scan the page.

Also, the path to the main RSS feed on the Connect page is broken and doesn't work:
  73. It's unbeliev-a-good!

I'd been thinking that they needed a site redesign, but THIS blows me away. Fantastic job, guys.
  74. The design is ok but what happened to the Current Version info that was in the left column? I realize that you have the article about 1.5.6 but what happens when the current version article is not listed? The current info is the first thing I look for before creating a new site to make sure I am starting with the most recent version of Joomla.
  75. Great! I like the Frontpage, but I miss the old community news.
  76. Lovely site - good work. The tri-image portal at the top will certainly be useful to new visitors.

    Just one comment :
The site layout will mean that users (like me) who scroll down to read the 'intro' text will not see navigation.

While my screen is large enough to accommodate the page, I (like others) tend to scroll so that the text I'm reading is more toward the top of my screen.

When this happens, the navigation menu at the top is no longer visible.

I suggest incorporating a quick-links menu at the top of the right-column. Just simple links - two per vertical line. That would save space, but give experienced users a quicker link (without having to scroll & move mouse).

Hope that is helpful - great site. Thanks!
  77. No, it’s not a good design. Not At all. It look not bad, but there many butts..>>It is already look old, not cutting edge. Too much extra space everywhere. Functionality suffering because of "the look". I need a site with easy navigation to get were I need fast and easy. I impressed that you more concern with look than with for home this site is and their needs –for users. The way it is now - it is too much scrolling on standard monitor. I consider this design not user friendly. Navigation should be improved. And in my opinion even the look is not completely crap, but the flagman ship site deserved a better, easier to use, functional, more compact and modern conservative approach. That is what separates joomla from other CMS. At this moment, just by looking at the front page I have a hard time to explain what is the joomla and why should I choose it over any other CMS. If you interested to be the best, - be the best and change it. I am voting for for radical changes to the site.
  78. Hey, this is cool....well done....
  79. It's really amazing :)
  80. Simply, it's great, I like it so much...

    Keep up the good work.
  81. I love the design. Especially when I saw it first at www.barackobama.com. Not that I've taken my share of inspiration from other sites ;-)
  82. Cool design. Good job guys.
  83. Hi Very nice design indeed but tell you the truth that previous one was looking more professional and elegant. This design has ease in navigation but if you speak abt the design then previous one was far more better then this.
  84. People be honest! new webdesign sucks! it looks like a poor copy of http://www.joomlaholic.com, which is a really bad site.
Remember, when somebody ask an opinion, they expect you to be honest. So, tell them the truth, this website design sucks!

    Take care
  85. It's fantastic :)
  86. Very nice improvement!!! Much better than the original site. I'm glad it has been upgraded. Looking forward to more upgrades.
  87. Thanks to all contributors to the new design, we love Joomla!
  88. please bring back the old website, its far more easy to read the content and the website feel is more like joomla default installation. plz i dont like this new design
  89. Whooaaaa... i can't use the download button, it shows article not found err or something like that.
Huh? Oh you was asking the design? Me thought it's... a.. um...

typically plain, not to shabby... but... plain nonetheless...
  90. I like this new design bcoz its simple than old one..
and i appreciate Joomla team. Good Luck.
  91. Font Tahoma 10px for default will be easier to read. Just like this comment page.
  92. Nice! :)
  93. I am a long time user and fan of Joomla. A lot of my clients sites have been built on it.

I have to be honest. It is good to see people are putting their energy toward the re-organization of the home page and the site layout, making sure that all of the site content is easily available. The navigation system seems cleaner, and the about pages are very descriptive especially for new users.

I do have to mention a criticism however, the graphic design looks plain and dated. The basic underline links make the site look amateurish, and use uncomfortably small text in the navigation bar.

Joomla is a professional, complex and well established CMS system, it needs a site design that reflects this.
  94. I think the site is very nice. It looks very professional and easy to navigate. Keep up the good work.
  95. clean design but... no download link on the front page is a major mistake
  96. That's cool.

but i think i need more time to forget the old one design.
  97. I cant really say it is fantastic or anything.

It looks like their was a great start on a template but it didnt get finished in terms of navigation etc.

Left side nav looks like a list of links as does the main menu.

Its an improvement but really I cant share the enthusiasm of the rest of the community as this doesnt show of joomla to its full potential.
  98. I'm missing to things for the usability: A search function and an easy way to become a RSS-Feed. The old RSS-URL don't works.
  99. Great aesthetics! But: There's no input field to do a search! What's more I can not spot which are the current 1.0.x or 1.5.x versions. And last: Where can I download them? There's absolutely now Download link!
  100. Excelent! Great job guys.
  101. Very nice work on the new site, including the layout and content. I see the 'Create and Share' icon bears a startling ressemblance to the Sydney JoomlaDay logo (sydney.joomladay.org.au) designed by Scott Stanley. Scott says he's flattered!
  102. Download link is on the frontpage, it points to: http:///www.joomla.org/download.html
  103. Hi Brad, you are right about the download link. It has been blocked by Firefox-Extension Adblock Plus, for whatever reason. Switching off Adblock the download button becomes visible.
  104. It could be much better. The design has nothing unique in itself and is poor according to me.
Also it looks ugly, when the remaining parts are using different designs (community, extensions etc.)
Documentation web site looks very ugly and is really hard to use. Joomlacode design also doesn't match, but it is not that important in terms of usability and design, as it is expected to be used by more pro users.
  105. Great template! It is a little plain, but very fresh and new. For the most part the site is geared towards new users. I don't think, however, it explains a whole lot about Joomla! and its versions. Could be a little more user-friendly".
  106. I know that templates take a lot of effort, but I liked the old one much better. That one had a unique style that really defined Joomla.

Also, none of the main menu links work in Opera 9.5.
  107. Great Design, Simple and everything together, not much scrolling needed.
  108. I miss a search field on the frontpage ... ;)
  109. This is the first time I ever logged onto Joomla! and I guess I am hooked, I can't wait to use joomla to create my own web content. To the creators: you make a teenager in ethiopia really happy.
  110. So damn sexy!
  111. Nice, but I don't like how it rips off Obama's site.
  112. OK. Enough is enough. Obama - you know I am a supporter and I'm not saying this is going to impact my vote, necessarily, but dude, why steal our look? I know, I know, the two sites are completely different in every single way - except the background has some similarities. I know, I know, that look is hot and there are variations of it all over the Internet. Which makes me wonder even more - why steal our look? Obama, "It's time for change!" Please, pick a different background now! ... Tewodros - it's comments like yours that keep contributors contributing - rock on - have fun with Joomla!
  113. There are some issues I want to address here:
    - The usability is poor on a 1024x... display. it should be centered. and the older one on api.joomla.org is even bad. the content part slips down to the bottom, the right area is white and I have to scroll down. This sucks..
    - the design does not make me say: wooh!
    - and the site has a poor performance here in Germany. I use three different providers to access the net, but with all of them the site is slow.
    - When I started to write this, I opened up a new window with the event calendar. It is not loaded up to now !
    - Who is the team who cares on this website and how can I help ?
  114. Aaaauuuu! :) It rocks!!! Way more functional. Excellent work, congratulations.
  115. I love the new design. It's simply elegant. I thinks it's a lot more sleek and professional than the old design and gives a much better first impression of Joomla.

As for the "they stole Obama's site" people, how many sites have you seen than "borrowed" a popular or hot look of the hour, e.g. Amazon's tabs (years ago), Apple's glassy reflection, etc...?

Bravo to the designers! I can't wait until you do the rest of the Joomla sites!
  116. Elegant and simple, taking all the clutter that was once an eye sore. One oversight though... Where is the site-search box?? Was this ignored on purpose??
  117. No, I don't like it. The old one was much easier to use with the latest download versions prominently displayed.
  118. Ok its new, so naturally it will make some sort of impression. I can admit that the clean design, backround flare and prominent border shadows, have some visual appeal.

However compared to its predecessor with the distinct, you-are-at-an-official-Joomla-site glossy black header, curved corners, sleek and professional lines which simply oozed style and character, its really no contest :-).

Good thing I spend more time in the docs area and forums :-). Former design RULES! :-) :) :)
  119. I sure was surprised when I browsed over to Joomla to see what is new and saw the fresh design for the first time. Great work everyone, it looks fantastic :D
  120. The old one was better. This one looks bad at 1024x768.
  121. MISSING
    List of current versions.
If found, please add back to the front page.
  122. (y) applaus applaus............. 123. Hi,
This new template sounds great, except the download button which is not enough visible. I spent more than 15s to find it!
Put it within the header like you did in the past.
    Regards,
  124. I like the new look, I just don't like the new layout. I liked having the current Joomla version listed on the home page.
  125. Site is easy to navigate and looks great!

Does anyone know what comment extension this site uses?
  126. @Alen the comment extension used is 'JXtended Comments'
  127. I love the new look of the site. I am very pleased with Joomla. I just started using it recently. Thanks to all who have put this together.
  128. Is it possible to download this template? I love it!!
