What is 'contributing' to an Open Source Project? Take Two

So, I was trolling around today and came across a blog post of mine from 2 years ago, you can see it here: What is 'contributing' to an Open Source Project?

What's so incredible is that names have hardly changed, many of those I mentioned 2 years ago are still there contributing as they do so well. Their forum post counts have certainly changed though, many of them doubled a few times.

It reminded me of the words from a Danish Philosopher who said:

"Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards."

.. Joomla has much history, but dwelling on that only helps us to understand. Making things happen are about the future, in life, and in Open Source.

I still believe what I wrote two years ago in conclusion:

Conclusion: There is no utopia. No one, and no project, is perfect. Do we have faults, yes, some of them may be more important to you than they are to me, however the fact remains, if you are here for Joomla, the structure is already in place (maybe not ideal, or perfect) for your contribution to be accepted.

So, will you contribute? If so, I look forward to seeing you in the community, genuinely helping people, in any way you can, within the current provisions that exist. Show me your contributions, and you'll have my respect! Talk is cheap, amateurs talk, professionals WORK.

Will you be a contributor in the future? That.. is up to you!

What names stand out to you in 2008 as contributors to the Joomla project?

  1. I will contribute to open source search crawler in 2009 as a web hosting company I will put a lot of my resource to make it happen thanks
  2. Brad good thoughts, I am still doing my part that is helping the staff with less knowledge. We of the Joomla! Brazil (www.joomla.com.br) we are going and that philosophy, the continuing. That 2009 is as good as 2008 for the Joomla! and our entire community.

    Thank you friend ...8-)
  3. I have learned what a great thing Joomla is during 2008. I found a great project to contribute to that offers something very unique to the open source community. I've been fortunate to join a great team at JFusion, and am currently their Newsletter Publisher, along with Documentation Team Leader. Every one shares at least 2 things in common, we believe in Joomla, and also JFusion.

It may be one project, but we are fortunate to have a team member from most major time zones. Everyone pitches in with what needs to be done, whether it's testing the current release, debugging it, maintaining the website, marketing, etc.
  4. As a user of the Joomla CMS in almost all implementations I have been party to, and as I am not a coder in any sense of the word (my alteration of any site is a laborious process - pick and find css and php files to alter to suit my needs), my contribution is limited. But contribute I do, by recommending Joomla, by installing Joomla, by recommending only secure, safe hosting, by securing my sites and by reading and being aware of changes and updates.

The only way I can contribute is by doing things right. Thereby making Joomla a desirable solution.

    Hope it helps.
  5. The danish's philosopher sentence is incredible.

It rapresents the meaning of the sacrificies that 'open source guys' do for their projects
  6. Ya will do needful to ppl's want help. Thanks for joomla team. Its a great to be with you all guys!
  7. I only use Joomla with and for my clients. I am a proponent of Joomla wherever I go. i teach people and my clients how to use Joomla. I have recruited over 15 people into using, experience and believing in Joomla. I have a business that specialises in offering solutions that hinge and hang around Joomla simply because I believe it is the best. I have considered giving Joomla money, since I believe that there are too many translators already (which is the only thing I can do for Joomla), because I am not a programmer's bum... So, there my secret is out - I am not a designer, I am a Joomla lover. That is my support. I report bugs wherever I find them, I will do more, where and when I can.

Joomla is simply the best. And for the remote parts of Africa, open source software that brings technology closer to common folk is a dream come true, and I have done that with Joomla.

    Thanks
