How's that new site design eh?
Written by Brad Baker
Don't you just love it: www.joomla.org
I just wanted to say a public thanks to Louis, Ron and others on the team who have worked so hard to make this new site happen. They have been working overtime (more than 12 hours a day recently I estimate) to bring this kind of amazing work to the community. Make sure you check out the new sites and it's many new features and sections.
If you see any of them around, make sure you say thanks.
Primarily of course, this site is for people who have not heard of Joomla before, for the the rest us, we have community.joomla.org Make sure you keep putting it to good use. When will this site receive the new design? I can't wait.
... and if you want to be apart of all this, there is one new page you should see: http://www.joomla.org/about-joomla/contribute-to-joomla.html
Enjoy!

1. the site is not valid code, see validator.w3.org, it even produces xml parsing errors - ridicolous!
2. you have no redirect from joomla.org to www.joomla.org - that shows major incompetence regarding SEO and the "duplicate content" problem.
Sounding very harsh and unfriendly is not meant personally - but as yourself are not aware of these thing it is quite obvious that you will duplicate these errors with every downoad of joomla to your even more incompetent users - therefor you are RESPONSIBLE for doing things RIGHT and should think twice before releasing something to the world.
xml errors and not beeing seo friendly by deafult is simply not a good thing nowadays and I would not let students pass with such results. so please go an make your homework - just try a little bt harder.

Great job, guys! You've now stepped into that realm where you're showing the power of design that Joomla! has.

Brad, you should have locked the guys in the cellar by bred and water, you would might have the whole site's in the new Design by now
Cheers, and well Done Folks!!!

Nice new design for the homepage but...
What happened to all the content you culled? Years of Joomla News pages gone into the ether... Seems a great shame as it was a huge and valable resource - now just a morass of 404 error pages...
Google does not like it when content is removed. would have been better to archive it at least.
2008-08-14 13:29:10
I've got 2 notes however:
1. The site's title is "Home". It'd be best if it was "Joomla!" at least.
2. The RSS feed on Announcements is broken, so no news via RSS for any new releases/news from j.org.
Cheers.

Thanks for all hard work!!

Nowhere on the page does it give a clear indication of what Joomla actually is, a new visitor to the site would not have a clue. I also have to mirror the comments about the site not being compliant, if this is the flagship site then is should be better than all others.
And why not do a complete site wide implementation of the template and not just the homepage. Its like painting one door of your truck a different color than the rest of the vehicle.
Anyway minor grips keep up the good work!

I'm looking forward to having the rest of the sections also have this template applied--the lack of visual consistency across extensions, forum, shop, developer, etc is a bit confusing. Hopefully that will be done sooner rather than later.
Great work!

By the way, fix your Link Texttemplate. It is falling apart in IE6 and WinXP.
"Welcome to the Joomla! Community Portal" text overlaps at the bottom. Some problems with background on right top and bottom corner and problems with border at the right side. Can't upload screenshot to show exactly. These problems should be easy fixable with fixed width template.
You are following common misconception, that it is possible to do CSS based layout for more than a couple of very basic cases. Default Joomla 1.5 template suffers from similar problems. It is surprising and it's a shame that Default template has problems. People are using it as a guideline for their own development.

I Understand your reason behind the changes in the home page
was to make this page more accessible to new users, but if that was the case why didn't you go all the way with it, making all the homepage new user oriented.
currently I feel this is a hybrid between the old design and the new concept, something in the middle. And for me this change is actually a step back from the old one.
I do appreciate all the hard work invested in the new design, but I give this criticism as my honest opinion on the change.
2008-08-14 21:40:56
Not being compliant could be considered a bit of a problem but no one would be so churlish that they complained on the first day. Second day, well fair enough.
Surely everybody in the whole world knows about Joomla! so there is no need whatsoever to actually say what Joomla! is and does. That would be wasting space and we wouldn't want to do that on one of the most valuable pages on the Internet now would we?

One minor design issue I noticed: the layout don't seems to fix into screen resolution of 1024 x 768. Horizontal scrollbars appeared on my IE7/WinXP. Perhaps the designers may want to fine tune the layout abit?
Overall, great improvement! Can't wait to see the rest of Joomla sites change! (Will missed the old design though

Think about how yahoo redesign their website. While keeping the main concept and design, they slightly made it sleeker. When I see the new joomla.org design, I thought it was hacked!! anyway.. just my concern! take care guys!

Why the alternating font sizes and light-coloured links? Very difficult to read or scan the page.
Also, the path to the main RSS feed on the Connect page is broken and doesn't work:

I'd been thinking that they needed a site redesign, but THIS blows me away. Fantastic job, guys.

Just one comment :
The site layout will mean that users (like me) who scroll down to read the 'intro' text will not see navigation.
While my screen is large enough to accommodate the page, I (like others) tend to scroll so that the text I'm reading is more toward the top of my screen.
When this happens, the navigation menu at the top is no longer visible.
I suggest incorporating a quick-links menu at the top of the right-column. Just simple links - two per vertical line. That would save space, but give experienced users a quicker link (without having to scroll & move mouse).
Hope that is helpful - great site. Thanks!

I have to be honest. It is good to see people are putting their energy toward the re-organization of the home page and the site layout, making sure that all of the site content is easily available. The navigation system seems cleaner, and the about pages are very descriptive especially for new users.
I do have to mention a criticism however, the graphic design looks plain and dated. The basic underline links make the site look amateurish, and use uncomfortably small text in the navigation bar.
Joomla is a professional, complex and well established CMS system, it needs a site design that reflects this.

It looks like their was a great start on a template but it didnt get finished in terms of navigation etc.
Left side nav looks like a list of links as does the main menu.
Its an improvement but really I cant share the enthusiasm of the rest of the community as this doesnt show of joomla to its full potential.

Also it looks ugly, when the remaining parts are using different designs (community, extensions etc.)
Documentation web site looks very ugly and is really hard to use. Joomlacode design also doesn't match, but it is not that important in terms of usability and design, as it is expected to be used by more pro users.

- The usability is poor on a 1024x... display. it should be centered. and the older one on api.joomla.org is even bad. the content part slips down to the bottom, the right area is white and I have to scroll down. This sucks..
- the design does not make me say: wooh!
- and the site has a poor performance here in Germany. I use three different providers to access the net, but with all of them the site is slow.
- When I started to write this, I opened up a new window with the event calendar. It is not loaded up to now !
- Who is the team who cares on this website and how can I help ?

As for the "they stole Obama's site" people, how many sites have you seen than "borrowed" a popular or hot look of the hour, e.g. Amazon's tabs (years ago), Apple's glassy reflection, etc...?
Bravo to the designers! I can't wait until you do the rest of the Joomla sites!

However compared to its predecessor with the distinct, you-are-at-an-official-Joomla-site glossy black header, curved corners, sleek and professional lines which simply oozed style and character, its really no contest
Good thing I spend more time in the docs area and forums

Put it within the header like you did in the past.
