Pressing Onward to 1.6

Last week Mark wrote the first Production Working Group Leadership status blog.  At last Saturday's meeting, for some strange reason I volunteered to write one this week.

Work continues on 1.6.  As Mark stated last week, the biggest task remaining for the release of 1.6 is ACL.  The other night Louis showed me some mockups of one of the UI widgets and they look quite sharp.  It is pretty exciting to see this much sought after feature finally starting to come together.  Hannes and Andrew have also been working hard to get all of the pieces together.  Once this gets to a workable stage we will be really close to 1.6 going beta!  Keep an eye on the branches in the SVN to get a look at what is happening.

The other area of focus is the Joomla! Labs Project. As most are aware, one of the struggles we've had as a project is figuring out how to open our doors to fresh developers. The Labs Project is one piece of the puzzle that will change the way we do development.  Stay tuned for more details.

Well, those are the highlights - we've come so far with 1.6 yet we still have some distance to travel as we head towards the beta process.  Can't wait!

  1. Joomla Labs? tell us more.
  2. I will join Joomla! Labs Project - I have benefited from Open Source Software and now would like to contribute as much as I can. 8-)
  3. I just want to wish you good luck on that.
I can't wait until 1.6 beta version come out.

  4. Take all the time you need... Nobody is waiting for this. And all the other features dropped from the todo list for 1.6 aren't important at all. ;-)
  5. Great!" So, how much time do you estimate for the beta release?
  6. Indeed. The Joomla community is the most patient of all. It is a true virtue and we are all praying to the gods of beta inspiration that it will find it's light to us when we are ready for it.
  7. The SVN isn't working.:-(
  8. I am amazed how a group of people that like programming, put their knowledge to the whole world! It's fantastic. I wish them all the best! Good luck and good work! Thank you.

  9. Thanks to all participants of the Joomla. I and all cannot thank you guys enough for the efforts you put in. It is a hobby for most of us and consume a lot of time and the only reward we get is the happy faces of our customers. The learner developers who I gauge to be 80% of us needed this leadership. Again thanks to the guys who put this on the map and who are guiding us to a very bright future. :-)
  10. I just wanted to say thank you for all the work done in the past and what you are doing for the future. We are a small (my wife and I) website company in a small town. We are pretty much learning as we go along and Joomla has been a massive help, enabling us to offer the types of site we would never be able to code or afford the commercial alternatives.

I recently lost my full time job so had to fall back on this little business to provide an income. If it wasn't for Joomla we simply would not have been able to take on the jobs we needed to keep the food on the table. in short you have helped save our arses and feed 6 mouths.

If ever the day comes I am proficient to contribute or privileged enough to make a donation trust me I will be there.

    Thank you so much!

    Kevin Preston,

PS. If I had one wish it would be for better security :-)
  11. Thanks to joomla!

    8-)

Hope it will solve lot of problems I have on ACL
  12. Geographically, we are a widely distributed organization. We use wiki software for collaborative writing, but run our website with Joomla. We would love to involve more of our members in creating content for our website, but have found Joomla's lack of ACL prohibitive. Our members work within multiple groups and perform different functions in each group. We are looking forward to the addition of ACL to Joomla, because it will open the door for each of our groups to contribute not only to our work, but to our public website.
  13. nice to read this words :)
  14. ALC, why dont use Zend_Acl, I think It's pretty :-D
  15. We're really looking forward to a native and, hopefully, comprehensive ACL solution. Is there a specification that we can read so we know what you're implementing? We're hoping it contains provisions for allowing authors, editors, and publishers to upload and manage content, menus, and modules from the front end according to, again hopefully, a rule-based/extensible permission set.
  16. Steve Amerige you took the words right out of my mouth (apologies to Meatloaf). "Is there a specification that we can read so we know what you're implementing"? Please share.
  17. Great to hear about the progress of 1.6 .

I hardly can wait for it. I am looking especially for the fully barrier free implementation in the standard system. (With no overrides required à la Beez.)

I am one of this 'inpatient' guys. Waiting for Beta. And going to make a life site with Beta 1.6. :-)

All the best. You are doing an incredible work.
    Best regards,
    Rolf
  18. Yeah. Can't wait for 1.6. If 1.6 comes out, combine it with K2, a product you can't beat.
Great work guys, keep up the good work.
  19. Looking forward to all the great changes the team has been working on for 1.6

Yes I want some Beta fun also
  20. Goverments could learn a lot from the way Open Source communities work to get things done for the good of all.
I cant code but I get by pretty well working out what I have to do to get things done, and I recommend Joomla to anyone looking to learn and help them out as best I can. This is my contribution to Joomla.8-)
  21. I hope there will be an upgrade path from 1.5 to 1.6. For me and I am sure thousands of others, a normal upgrade from one version to the next is the most important part.
  22. I am not understanding why development of 1.6 branch last so long... It's almost 3 years until 1.5 have released and
the bunch of features for 1.6 is not so sensational. It seems to me that Joomla is loosing it's momentum until concurrents like Drupal is gaining.

And i am not understand why developers are trying to keep f..g compatibility? It's time to drop these ugly Mambo's tails.
  23. Great idea of setting up and organize Joomla lab(s) and involve and get results from world wide devs.
  24. Why you peaople are doing this ? I really don't understand. What are the benefits at the point of the end users ?

Joomla 1.6 probably will be much more slower and bloated than Joomla 1.5 which is slower than Joomla 1.x.

I don't see any performance reasons or benefits to upgrade.

After the discontinuation of the Joomla 1.x I can't use Joomla as CMS. No support, foreced to upgrade. Joomla 1.5 needs a better hosting etc.

Please read my post at the forum:
    http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=455723
  25. Downloaded and installed on localhost. Cursory exploration -- looks sharp, good feel, has more amenity than 1.5 seems faster. Very encouraging, congrats to the team. Can't wait for beta and to upgrade our site eventually: www.pwguild.org.au keep up the good work.

  26. go for full ajax on joomla
  27. many are looking forward to 1.6, thanks for your work.

i hope the ACL tables will be documented well since we have to upgrade several websites from 1.0.x using JACL directly to 1.6
  28. It always great to hear how one project evolves. And Joomla is not just any project. It really fantastic how much whole thing grew and tnx to its huge community i cant imagine any other solution at the moment.

Although i agree with some complains and comments above, I'm certain that we will benefit from new version of our fav CMS much more than we will experience problems around it. So, i give development team my full support and hopefully I'll try to give some small contribution to the community. Anyway... what would life be without problems to solve and challenges to take, right ? ;-)
