What You Want From Your Desktop Content Manager

Hi everyone,

As I have foretold in my last blog that I am working over a Desktop App which will serve as an interface to J! installation, I would now request you to help me in this context. When I submitted my specs I was asked about the features I would like to add apart from the one which the app intends to do. The best answer to this question can be given only by the end-users. So I think its better to ask the customers i.e. community what they want . Hence I would request you to list all the features which you would like your Desktop Frontend to have as comments to this blog. I will try my best to provide all the desired ones in the forthcoming releases.

Thank You

Rahul Verma

  1. I hope the interface will look like the Joomla interface/skin the admin has put in place.

One of the assumptions users will have with a "Desktop Application" is that they can cut-n-paste from Word, Excel, etc. Then they wonder why the resulting page doesn't look like their desktop document.

The editor present in the desktop app should mimic that found in the administration area. In other words, if TinyMCE or JCE or others are used in the browser-based administration, then the same editor should also appear in the desktop app so the user will not be confused and can still see/use the "Paste from Word" button.
  2. I hope you are creating this in Adobe Flex or Google Gears so it is cross platform, right? Or do I understand the concept incorrectly.
  3. Will the desktop app have a live two way connection to the Joomla admin? uploading images, adding articles, and menu items, I think are top priority.
  4. You can read more about Rahul's project on his GSOC student page: http://community.joomla.org/gsoc2009/rahul-verma.html
  5. I'm thinking it would be pretty easy to integrate Dreamweaver or some other desktop code editor to edit html and css in articles and modules. I would have the desktop app with Dreamweaver integrated, and my clients would use the web based version. They get the simplicity. I get the power.
  6. First of all tnx for trying to create a good desktop app!! The weakest linkt for J! is it depends on a good internet connection.

Our website is mainly a travel blog, most of the time traveling we don't have internet. So doing al the work offline and have a mass upload(50 pics and 2 or 3 articles at the time) when Inet is availeble.

the most ideal situation (for me) would be to have a offline copy of the website on my laptop so I can do everything the same as on the live site and whit one push on the sync button.......

Maybe it's a good thing to have a look at JoomlaPC wicht is a prety good way to host joomla on a PC.

    Keep up the good work!!
