Thank You Joomla Bug Squad

As you may recall, Joomla! version 1.6 beta was released about 4 and ½ months ago, on 17 May 2010. I just ran a count of all of the bugs that have been fixed in version 1.6 since then, and the total is a whopping 811! Way to go, Bug Squad!

How Close is Joomla 1.6?

811 bugs have been fixed and "only" 21 issues currently block the release of version 1.6 RC1 (Release Candidate 1).

Now, before you do the math (let's see, 811 issues fixed in 4.5 months is 180 per month or 6 per day, so fixing 21 issues should take 4 days or less ...), please understand that these RC blockers are generally a lot more complicated and time-consuming than your average issue (which in some cases is why they haven't been tackled yet). It is also likely that at least a few more RC blocking issues will be reported before RC1 is out. Plus, we are still fixing other issues during the time we are working on the RC blockers.

Nevertheless, it is a sign of great progress that we are to the point where we can see exactly what has to be completed before RC1 is ready. Hooray!

How Can You Help?

So, by now you are asking yourself "What can I do to help?". The answer is … a lot!

First, if you are interested, consider joining the Joomla Bug Squad. You don't have to be a programmer or super-technical (although it's fantastic if you are!). You don't have to devote your entire life to fixing Joomla! bugs (although that's fine if you want to).

You just have to be a reasonably confident Joomla! user willing to learn a little about SVN and patches, and you need to be willing to spend a few hours here and there to help make Joomla! the best program possible. That's it. And, there are lots of Bug Squad members who will be happy to help you get up to speed.

Second, download the latest beta release (or the latest nightly build) and start using it (not on a production site, of course)! The more people who use 1.6, the sooner we'll be able to find and fix issues.

So, get ready. Version 1.6 is coming soon to a server near you. And, thanks to everyone in the Bug Squad and in the community for your fantastic work!
