Joomla 1.6 Alpha 2 Released
Written by Ken Crowder
The Joomla project is pleased to announce the immediate release of Joomla 1.6 alpha 2. This release contains many new features requested by the community; most notably, ACL. Other features are listed below as well as what you can expect in the future for Joomla 1.6.
This is an alpha release. It is intended to be a developer/hobbyist preview and is not intended to be used on a production web site.
New improvements/features since alpha 1 include:
- ACL: access management for global permissions as well as content item specific permissions, variable usergroups, users member of more than one usergroup, permissions are inherited, really fast
- Extendable user profile, profile view in frontend, extendable user parameters
- Tableless com_content layouts
- Improved com_content modules (mod_articles_archive, mod_articles_latest, mod_articles_popular)
- Article linker plugin for editors
- New frontend template (atomic)
- New backend template (bluestork)
- New uploader for media manager
Other Joomla 1.6 improvements that existed in alpha 1:
- Mootools 1.2
- Refactored backend
- JForm
- Nested Categories and category parameters
- New views in frontend: categories, category
- Lots of small code improvements, almost cut the code size in half while adding to the functionality
- PHP 5.2 required, huge performance improvements, partially eaten up by new features => 1.6 will be faster than 1.5
What's next?
After alpha 2, the Joomla community can expect a beta release. There are no intentions for a 3rd alpha release.
You can also expect to see the following future improvements:
- Commenting solution is going to be added
- Additional DB drivers
- Lots of small performance/UI/code improvements
We would like to thank all those involved who helped make this release possible.

First of all I want to say that you did a great job and Joomla 1.6 is very promising, it is going in the right way.
I must say however that I'm a bit shared in my feelings about this Alpha Release 2. I get quite few errors, specially when I try to register a user.
When I try to register a new user I get an error, there is no email sent to activate the account and if I try to activate the user in the back-end I get another error, I need to create manually the users. When I login with the user I get a 404 error, even though the user is logged in.
When I create a module I can't set access level, it doesn't take into account the value I select, it sets automatically to "Public".
Linking to another article is indeed very easy but this feature does not work 100%, the article link is added at the beginning of the article and not where the cursor is.
Atomic template simply doesn't work for me, I simply get no layout.
Not everything is bad of course
Thank you very much to all those who made possible the new Joomla.

for example:
it's not possible add something under: action permitted when you edit a group, (do i have to install first a component to add possibilities in this section?
It's not possible to change/select the front end template (the buttons default is missign)
Anyway, I'm looking forward for the final version!
good luck

1. (minor) All new articles have 'read more' automatically inserted as first test - you have to go to source view to delete it.
2. (major) Because the user manager is core, not component, it doesn't seem possible to set access control to it separately to the back end generally. Its important that I have back end users who cannot access user details, back end users who can, and back end users who do both (i.e. the site admin, the membership administrator and the super admin), so these should be separate permissions.
3. It seems that anyone who has back-end admin permissions can change the general permissions table - and thus could lock out the super-administrator (either deliberately or by mistake). Is this really intended?

With that aside, thank you very much, Joomla! team. I loved playing with the Alpha 1 release, just for the new ACL alone. I can't wait to try out this version. You guys are making great strides to truly become the best open-source CMS available. Keep up the good work!

Also a lot faster it looks. Great job!

Some issues I have come across so far:
While streamlining the ACL by removing User Groups and Permissions, I have changed or removed nearly all. When I tried to delete the last user group that I did not want, I received an error stating that I was not allowed to view the page. I logged out, and when I tried to log in again I got an incorrect password error.
Note: I was logged in as Super User (I think it is called) and did not and was not trying to delete the Super User group.

1. Any place to find out details about the new Redirect component? (which btw errors to "Illegal variable _files or _env or _get or _post or _cookie or _server or _session or globals passed to script." if you click New and then Cancel..)
2. "Extendable user profile" where is this done, found nothing in admin interface..?
3. Messaging: index.php?option=com_messages&view=message&layout=edit" leads to a blank page
Nested categories are way cool !!
4. what is "Discover" in Extension manager?
5. frontend user editing = blank page (component/users/?task=profile.save)
So far so GOOD!

One point however I'd like to mention. Assumed a registered user with 'editor' right creates an article. Because it is a very extensive one the user saves his work and is running straight into a problem. He has no chance to continue his work on the not yet published article because he has no access to. I think there should be a way to continue to work on an article by 'Author' and/or 'Editor' in the pre-published state.
Best regards

R E S P E C T to developers
As long as blog layout doesn't break the template (when "read more" is used) anymore, I am happy

When you make beta, make sure that it is widely tested and quality bug reports submitted. This will shorten the testing cycle and produce quality code.

- Resend activation code to whom did not active his/her account yet.
all the rest seems to be perfect especially the possibilty to add subcategories finally
Thanks for your efforts

when adding a menu items for core components, it would be cool to proceed immediately to the "required parameters" in the same modal box right after selecting the link type. no need to close the popup and then open up another one to select the article!
As an experienced administrator of joomla sites, these type of things would speed up setup drastically!
Amen for the batch processing on menus...

The new code base has been optimised to take adavantage of new php functionalities. First, they eliminated big PEAR libraries in favor of native php functions. That alone should result in a significant improvement. Second, the new jimport / JLoader now uses spl_autoload to autoload classes. This is a very important detail, that hasnt been mentioned. However, it might the single best improvement to the whole Joomla code. This is really bleeding edge technology. Forget about acl, and nested categories. The new Joomla code is the real improvement. Enough said. Very happy with the new code; just as I would've done it.

What about additional content types like Content Construction Kit (Drupal will have this on next version)? There is K2, but I do not know anything about compatibility with 1.6
