Joomla 1.6 Alpha 2 Released

The Joomla project is pleased to announce the immediate release of Joomla 1.6 alpha 2. This release contains many new features requested by the community; most notably, ACL. Other features are listed below as well as what you can expect in the future for Joomla 1.6.

This is an alpha release. It is intended to be a developer/hobbyist preview and is not intended to be used on a production web site.

New improvements/features since alpha 1 include:

  • ACL: access management for global permissions as well as content item specific permissions, variable usergroups, users member of more than one usergroup, permissions are inherited, really fast
  • Extendable user profile, profile view in frontend, extendable user parameters
  • Tableless com_content layouts
  • Improved com_content modules (mod_articles_archive, mod_articles_latest, mod_articles_popular)
  • Article linker plugin for editors
  • New frontend template (atomic)
  • New backend template (bluestork)
  • New uploader for media manager

Other Joomla 1.6 improvements that existed in alpha 1:

  • Mootools 1.2
  • Refactored backend
  • JForm
  • Nested Categories and category parameters
  • New views in frontend: categories, category
  • Lots of small code improvements, almost cut the code size in half while adding to the functionality
  • PHP 5.2 required, huge performance improvements, partially eaten up by new features => 1.6 will be faster than 1.5

What's next?

After alpha 2, the Joomla community can expect a beta release. There are no intentions for a 3rd alpha release.

You can also expect to see the following future improvements:

  • Commenting solution is going to be added
  • Additional DB drivers
  • Lots of small performance/UI/code improvements

We would like to thank all those involved who helped make this release possible.

  11. There is any patch to update from the 1.5.* version ?
Thanks a lot, this new version is awesome !8-)
  12. Great!
I'm excited to try it out... 8-)
  13. You deserve more than the Nobel prize. The amount of work put into each release is greatly appreciated! Thank you so much for all you do!
  14. Hi guys,

First of all I want to say that you did a great job and Joomla 1.6 is very promising, it is going in the right way.

I must say however that I'm a bit shared in my feelings about this Alpha Release 2. I get quite few errors, specially when I try to register a user.

When I try to register a new user I get an error, there is no email sent to activate the account and if I try to activate the user in the back-end I get another error, I need to create manually the users. When I login with the user I get a 404 error, even though the user is logged in.

When I create a module I can't set access level, it doesn't take into account the value I select, it sets automatically to "Public".

Linking to another article is indeed very easy but this feature does not work 100%, the article link is added at the beginning of the article and not where the cursor is.

Atomic template simply doesn't work for me, I simply get no layout.

Not everything is bad of course :) as I said before, Joomla 1.6 looks very very promising, it's ACL is looking really good, his new uploader is very nice, just need to fix some errors and I'm sure it will be done in Beta Release.

Thank you very much to all those who made possible the new Joomla.
  15. Great job! Thx!
  16. Just have to say THANK YOU guys ;) I love Joomla..
  17. I'm actually testing it right now and I found already two little things that don't seem correct (? maybe I'm wrong):
    for example:
it's not possible add something under: action permitted when you edit a group, (do i have to install first a component to add possibilities in this section?
It's not possible to change/select the front end template (the buttons default is missign)

Anyway, I'm looking forward for the final version!
    good luck
  18. Yes!!! This is, as usual, awesome news! I'm very happy it finally came out and very exited to give it a try.

    THANK YOU GUYS!!!! :-D
  19. Love it but the 'Legacy' is something which is going to be called for a lot. Is there any chance that you guys can allow 1.0 templates to be installed as there are so many out there and some of them are VERY good. There is only 1 template that i like for joomla and thats the Red Evo Aphelion, but it's for 1.0. Please support 1.0 templates in the final version, theres still good ones out there!!!

    Thanks
  20. hi

    i like joomla 1.6 . it's amazing.

    http://localhost/joomla16a2/administrator/templates/bluestork/admin/images/tick.png

    admin template image path wrong.
  21. Im just installed 1.6 and briefly went through the administrator. I must say that this looks really promising! Everything that was missing in 1.5 is no longer a problem. User groups, multilevel categories, comment for articles etc. Wonderful!:-D
  22. Hi. I like the improvements a lot. Couple of issues:
    1. (minor) All new articles have 'read more' automatically inserted as first test - you have to go to source view to delete it.
    2. (major) Because the user manager is core, not component, it doesn't seem possible to set access control to it separately to the back end generally. Its important that I have back end users who cannot access user details, back end users who can, and back end users who do both (i.e. the site admin, the membership administrator and the super admin), so these should be separate permissions.
    3. It seems that anyone who has back-end admin permissions can change the general permissions table - and thus could lock out the super-administrator (either deliberately or by mistake). Is this really intended?
  23. Hey guys, remember, this is still in ALPHA, so there will, of course, be a lot of bugs. I wouldn't worry too much about them, but if you must, the official bug tracker is the place to place them, not the comments here. I'm positive that by the first (or only) beta, most of them will be fixed.

With that aside, thank you very much, Joomla! team. I loved playing with the Alpha 1 release, just for the new ACL alone. I can't wait to try out this version. You guys are making great strides to truly become the best open-source CMS available. Keep up the good work! 8-)
  24. Very nice. The improvement with the user groups was a must and is the thing I'm most exited about.
Also a lot faster it looks. Great job! :-D
  25. The expectation...nice, very nice! Joomla this is it!
  26. thanks keep it up
  27. Great! Have been waiting for ages :-D
  28. Does 1.6 suppport (almost) 1.5's attensions?
  29. Great Job! Cant wait for final version :D
    Thanks!
  30. I'm loving playing with the J!1.6 Alpha 2.

Some issues I have come across so far:
While streamlining the ACL by removing User Groups and Permissions, I have changed or removed nearly all. When I tried to delete the last user group that I did not want, I received an error stating that I was not allowed to view the page. I logged out, and when I tried to log in again I got an incorrect password error.

Note: I was logged in as Super User (I think it is called) and did not and was not trying to delete the Super User group.
  31. Started testing SVN again, looks very nice so far!
    1. Any place to find out details about the new Redirect component? (which btw errors to "Illegal variable _files or _env or _get or _post or _cookie or _server or _session or globals passed to script." if you click New and then Cancel..)
    2. "Extendable user profile" where is this done, found nothing in admin interface..?
    3. Messaging: index.php?option=com_messages&view=message&layout=edit" leads to a blank page
Nested categories are way cool !!
    4. what is "Discover" in Extension manager?
    5. frontend user editing = blank page (component/users/?task=profile.save)
    So far so GOOD! ;-)
  32. finally Drupal fans can switch to Joomla!!! Discussion close ;-)
  33. Great work, thank you for all your time!!! 8-)

One point however I'd like to mention. Assumed a registered user with 'editor' right creates an article. Because it is a very extensive one the user saves his work and is running straight into a problem. He has no chance to continue his work on the not yet published article because he has no access to. I think there should be a way to continue to work on an article by 'Author' and/or 'Editor' in the pre-published state.

    Best regards
  34. Yes. This is the CMS what we want. !!!!

The system is with very nice ACL!

    Go joomla!!!!!!!!!!:-D
  35. Thank you, a great job!:-)
  36. ACL! A new horizon...
  37. Open source redeems humanity in the face of greed. 1.6 is fantastic, thank you thank you thank you. I have been desperate for granular ACL. Time to hug the person next to you!
  38. Would we be able to upgrade from joomla 1.5.x ?
  39. Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet !
  40. Looks like Team Joomla is making serious, meaningful progress.
  41. tags in the core anyone?
  42. very very good but... about the new search improved component?
  43. Great work, keep it up!
    R E S P E C T to developers :-D

As long as blog layout doesn't break the template (when "read more" is used) anymore, I am happy 8-)
  44. Instead of developing new versions please countinue to support existing products to make these stable, secure and highly reliable. Please continue to support Joomla 1.x

Please read my post at the forum:
    http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=455723
  45. Great work!!!:-)
  46. Joomla 1.6 is hawt... 8-)
  47. i got error Fatal error: Call to undefined function mb_strpos()
  48. Amazing.
I'm going to hold off installing this on any important sites, but I'm definitely going to be testing it.

    Thanks devs!
  49. dont like that SECTIONS are not there for articles. maybe i am overlooking but i dont find it and my sites are all section and category heavy
  50. great
thank you.My best regards to developers
  51. That's great news!!! I'd like to start a new deployment and ACL is surely a must.

When you make beta, make sure that it is widely tested and quality bug reports submitted. This will shorten the testing cycle and produce quality code. :-D
  52. Eagerly waiting for the final release of Joomla 1.6. But I'm definitely testing this alpha2 release.
    good work joom-team.:-)
  53. It would be very useful to have the possibilty to:
    - Mass Mail only who NEVER logged in;
    - Resend activation code to whom did not active his/her account yet.

all the rest seems to be perfect especially the possibilty to add subcategories finally:-).

    Thanks for your efforts
    Antoine
  54. Hopefully some high up Joomla moderator is reading this... Bring back ALL the user icons in the admin editing area. My customers need them to add rows to tables, insert video files, etc. Without these they might as well not be using a CMS!! After the 1.5.11 they removed a great deal of these from the admin area - particularly the article manager and module manager interfaces. WHY?!??!?!!?!?!?! Not real happy about it. Please email and let me know if these will be put back in the "new and improved" version!
  55. Would CAPCHA be included by default in Joomla forms?
  56. The list of improvements sound impressive and I'm very much looking forward to the final release. Keep up the great work.
  57. Workflow suggestion:

when adding a menu items for core components, it would be cool to proceed immediately to the "required parameters" in the same modal box right after selecting the link type. no need to close the popup and then open up another one to select the article!

As an experienced administrator of joomla sites, these type of things would speed up setup drastically!

Amen for the batch processing on menus...
  58. Will 1.6 allow custom fields for content?
  59. I dont know if anyone will see this comment down here, anyway. I just want to post that I've taken time to examine the new joomla library to estimate how the code improvement will result in performance. If 1.6 finally hits the ground running with the new improvements, Joomla performance will be very, very, very efficient.

The new code base has been optimised to take adavantage of new php functionalities. First, they eliminated big PEAR libraries in favor of native php functions. That alone should result in a significant improvement. Second, the new jimport / JLoader now uses spl_autoload to autoload classes. This is a very important detail, that hasnt been mentioned. However, it might the single best improvement to the whole Joomla code. This is really bleeding edge technology. Forget about acl, and nested categories. The new Joomla code is the real improvement. Enough said. Very happy with the new code; just as I would've done it.
  60. It will possible to update version by un link in the administration ?

    THX

  61. Good work
  62. Yaaaaaayyy!!
  63. Brilliant! So exciting! Looking forward to seeing the best CMS in the world take another leap forward!

NB I love the new look, and the clean template is something we have been installing separately for years so many thanks for that, it seems your always doing what is needed, never a breath wasted.

    Warm Regards,
    Tom.
  64. I always pinch myself that Joomla is an open source product. The Joomla user community is so appreciative of everyones efforts in the v1.6 team. Looking forward to the release.
  65. I'm going to try it in a production web-site. I'd like to study and test with content...
Thanks a lot for your job :-)
    Marino
  66. It sure will be nice to use mootools 1.2. I couldn't use all those neat effects. I tried using 1.2 with Joomla but it killed the Admin panel menu. nertz. It sure would be nice if one could load a different mootols for the front end than the back, because they might come up with another version that isn't backward compatible.
  67. i saw an error.in admin panel a 'delete' icon doesnt exist.there is a red cross.
  68. I installed the beta. I notice the Sections have been dropped for categories.
Will you be to put multiple categories on an article? Sometimes I need to display an article in multiple categories.....
Thanks for the great work. I can't wait.
  69. Is there no way to make a new or edited article "featured" while it is open? There only seems to be a way to do this directly from the article manager list view.
  70. is it possible now to use postgresql as databse in joomla 1.6? thanks
  71. I love nested categories!

What about additional content types like Content Construction Kit (Drupal will have this on next version)? There is K2, but I do not know anything about compatibility with 1.6
