Sarah Verroken
Sarah Verroken (˚1982, Belgium) graduated in 2006 as a Master in Visual Arts, specialized in illustration. As part of her graduation project, she wrote and illustrated a children's book called 'Boos'. The work won the Illustrator's Award of the City Hasselt and, as a result, was published by the Belgian publisher Clavis.
After being published, the book won some awards (Plantin Moretus Award for best design, nomination for the Best book of the year: 'Boekenpauw', nomination for the KJV (Kids and Youth Jury Flanders 2009 (winners not yet announced) and the rights have been sold to several countries (South Korea, Australia, New Zealand (titled 'Feeling Sad'), ... ).
At the moment, Sarah lives and works in Wellington (New Zealand) as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator. She illustrates for both adults and for children. The emphasis of her work lies on the interplay between art and audience, thus integrating the needs of her audience and her artistic expression. She is currently working on two books, one for New Zealand adults that is scheduled to hit the shelves in December 2008, and one for American children that should be available in Autumn 2009.
Sarah's favorite technique for now is a combination of woodcut and Photoshop (e.g. Feeling Sad), but her eternal experimenting and looking for new ways to express herself, prevent her from using the same techniques over and over again.
